Hello I am re-subscribing after a gap. I am trying to find my Ashurst ancestors. James Ashurst and Margaret Pilling married 11 May 1839 at St Oswalds RC Chapel. James was 23, his father was John Ashurst - weaver. I have lots of information about the Pilling family. They show no signs of being an RC family. I can discover nothing about James' parents and siblings. I would be very grateful if someone could look ath the RC registers at the History Shop in Wigan. i understand that the History Shop has RC baptisms up to 1822 for Ashton Garswood Hall and for Ashton, Our lady Immaculate. I would like details of James' baptism about 1815 - 1816, and of any siblings. It would be fantastic if someone could help. Anne I am in Sheffield and am happy to do look-ups there.
Hi Anne Eric Winstanley has lots of information on Ashton and I am sure he mentioned the Pillings. Please contact me on joyce.riddick@btinternet and I will contact Eric with your e-mail address if you haven't already got it. Hello Anne, Thank you for your e-mail. Sorry that I can't help, but you may find some help from the Lancashire List - will send you the address in my next e-mail. You may also find lots of information on the Mormon Church 1881 British Census and National Index ( bought them; 26 discs for £26.00 )- that's where I started about 9 years ago. I found my GGGF James Eden born 1815 ect. >From that information and using the Mormon Sites I have recently found Esther Marsh born Wigan (Hence my recent interest in Wigan). Esther maried my GGGGGF Thomas Eden in 1780. With regard to the Lancashire List - the vast majority of people one writes to, never answer - it seem that lots of rearchers just don't have the time to say thank you. Recently I found some interest in the website British History Online- open it up and enter Lancashire, then: Newton In Makerfield. (now Ashton in Makerfield)Scroll down and find the "Banner" for the Bretherton Family, then scroll thru and find James Eden who married the sister of John Bretherton- Could not find the name of his wife, James died 1625 leaving a son Gilbert - interesting stuff!!!!!!Could be a relative of mine ???.. Good luck with your research.
