Hi I think your Sharples must have been with some of my Horrocks 1861- vanished - only to return by 1871. One of my thoughts is America as the family did go there during the 1860's- could people have gone out and returned- failing that maybe simple missing census entries. Re Elizabeth- at a long shot maybe she died 1851- I would be tempted to get the cert to see what it says- then again I have several certs that have no connection to me. Deaths Dec 1851 (>99%) Sharples Elizabeth Wigan 21650 Im thinking the Mary Sharples born circa 1792 who appears with various children on census up to 1881 is Elizabeths mam, doesnt seem like they ever lived together after 1841 tho so no help there. Do you have James marriage cert- do the witnesses help and or where he was living- I know its a few years after the 1861 census but you never know. All in all im no help at all but i do hope you suceed- and dont waste too much money on certs:) carol
Hi Carol! Thank you very much for your help. You are right about Mary Sharples being her Mum, they lived together when Elizabeth's Son James was born and she was the informant. Mary Sharples then lived with her other two daughters before dying at the ripe old age of 91. I will send off for the death certificate and hope that it is 'my' Elizabeth. I attach James's Marriage Certificate, 1st January 1868, I am not sure if you will receive it, but it shows the witnesses as his wife's sister Ann and her husband-to-be William Atherton - Both of whom have also disappeared in the 1881 census and after! At the time of Marriage James lived in Latham's Yard, Queen Street, Wigan and Jane his wife, in Ashcroft's Yard, Queen Street, Wigan. I do thank you very much, Carol, not only for the effort you have put into this but also for the 'thought provoking' you have put into me! With very best wishes Norman Sharples. -----Original Message----- From: eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carolgriff@aol.com Sent: 30 January 2008 14:44 To: eng-lan-wigan@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WIGAN] 1861 Census Hi I think your Sharples must have been with some of my Horrocks 1861- vanished - only to return by 1871.
