    1. Re: [WIGAN] Elizabeth Mcmillin- is she a McMullen?
    2. Hi there Im just wondering if you are connected to me re Elizabeth McMillan 1861 census - parents John and Mary. Im thinking these could infact be my John McMullen and his wife Mary and daughter Elizabeth. 1871 census on ancestry has them as Mullen- future census returns continue to be different NameAge Elizabeth Mullen11 John W Mullen39 Mary Mullen38 Thomas Mullen8 Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 3884; Folio: 116; Page: 28; GSU roll: 842036. Im going from memory- Elizabeth marries a Finch? Anyway John is the brother of my William McMullen- their dad was Henry.I havent found Henry on any census and assume he died pre 1841- or more likely pre 1837. I havent found John on 1841 census come to that- William is there saying born Ireland- Im guessing the family came from Ireland around 1820 due to parish entries of sibling kids in Wigan from circa 1822. Any connection? Carol

    1. [WIGAN] Removal Orders
    2. Hi I need a lesson in removal orders. Im looking at 2 items of interest to me on National Archives "FILE - Wigan to Orrell. Order of removal of Roger Horrocks, Alice his wife and Matthew, Alice, Mary, Ann and Peggy their children - ref. QSP/2117/64 - date: 1780 26 Jun" FILE - Wigan to Ince in Makerfield. Order of removal of John Horrocks, Mary his wife and Mary their daughter - ref. QSP/2707/93 - date: 1816 17 Sep Does this mean that one or more of the people mentioned were born in the places they were being removed to? (Im starting to try and build a picture of my Horrocks and I think John mentioned in 1816 is the son of young Matthew mentioned 1780 - to further complicate matters i believ alice was the 2nd wife of Roger Horrocks- they were married March 1780 in Wigan. Any comments welcome. carol

    1. [WIGAN] Darwell family in Wigan
    2. Robert Evensen
    3. I am trying to find information on the family of Percy and Mildred Darwell of Wigan. Mildred Elfreda (Robinson) Darwell died in Jun 1996 in Wigan. She was born 1908 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. I do not have the full death date. I have no information on the birth or death of her husband Percy. They had one daughter Peggy (Margaret ?) Darwell who married a Nichols and perhaps a Dow. Not sure. Peggy was a police officer, perhaps in Wigan. She may still be alive. Is there a possibility that there was a death notice or obituary for Mildred Darwell in June 1996? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Robert L. Evensen Cambridge, Massachusetts USA

    1. [WIGAN] FFHS-NEWS TRANSFER OF GRO TO IDENTITY & PASSPORT SERVICE
    2. Lynne
    3. Forwarded with the author's kind permission. -------- Original Message -------- TRANSFER OF GRO TO IDENTITY & PASSPORT SERVICE The Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and creation of the independent Office for National Statistics (ONS), left the General Register Office (GRO) uncertain as to which government department it would move to from ONS for the next financial year. However it has been announced today that the GRO will become part of the Identity and Passport Service (IPS) from 1 April 2008. Under the new arrangements ONS will relinquish the registration role it currently holds. IPS is an Executive Agency of the Home Office, and is responsible for handling passport applications from UK Nationals. It employs over 3,500 staff at various locations around the UK. You can find more information about them on their website www.ips.gov.uk. The decision to make the transfer of GRO to IPS has been finalised following the outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review. . A full statement on these changes can be found at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/aboutus/lookingahead/registration-transfer.asp Maggie Loughran Administrator, Federation of Family History Societies www.ffhs.org.uk

    3. Hello Carol Thank you for your speedy reply and the research you have done. In 1841 Elizabeth and her son were living with Elizabeth's widowed Mother, Mary/Molly Sharples in John Street, Wigan. As attached The Sharples Family which contains Zephaniah Sharples, who moved to Staffordshire is a separate but parallel Sharples Family - I have not managed to link them together yet! I am also looking for William Foster born in 1875 in Wigan Lancashire (Parents William & Elizabeth Foster) on the 1891 Census. Do you happen to have this and his family?
