    2. Norman Sharples
    3. Hi Carol! Thank you very much for your help. You are right about Mary Sharples being her Mum, they lived together when Elizabeth's Son James was born and she was the informant. Mary Sharples then lived with her other two daughters before dying at the ripe old age of 91. I will send off for the death certificate and hope that it is 'my' Elizabeth. I attach James's Marriage Certificate, 1st January 1868, I am not sure if you will receive it, but it shows the witnesses as his wife's sister Ann and her husband-to-be William Atherton - Both of whom have also disappeared in the 1881 census and after! At the time of Marriage James lived in Latham's Yard, Queen Street, Wigan and Jane his wife, in Ashcroft's Yard, Queen Street, Wigan. I do thank you very much, Carol, not only for the effort you have put into this but also for the 'thought provoking' you have put into me! With very best wishes Norman Sharples. -----Original Message----- From: eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carolgriff@aol.com Sent: 30 January 2008 14:44 To: eng-lan-wigan@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [WIGAN] 1861 Census Hi I think your Sharples must have been with some of my Horrocks 1861- vanished - only to return by 1871. 3. Hello Listers, Can anyone give me some information on Sally Or Sarah Greenwood. She was the daughter of Edward & Sarah McGuire who lived ar 48 Petticoat Lane, Ince in Makerfield when the 1901 census was taken, Sarah Jane was 2 years old. I have been told that Sarah/Sally lived all her life in Wigan and married a man named GREENWOOD, I do not know his first name. As McGuire has at least five different spellings, to-day I have searched marriages for Greenwood ,cross reference McGuire, from 1915 to 1933 I found only two surname Maguire which were not correct. I would appreciate any information or suggestions as to what I can do next in my search. Many thanks for reading this enquiry. Nancye n.abrooks@bigpond.com 30.01.08 4.55pm

    3. Hi Carol Thank you for your response In 1871 James was a coalminer. There is a James Sharples of the same age who was a coalminer in Staffordshire (?). I have followed that but sadly discovered that the two James were not the same person. 1. [WIGAN] BRAMWELL - ASPULL?
    2. Hello everyone, I'm looking for descendants of a lady named Annie Bramwell. This was probably her married name. She would have been born circa 1870-1880 I suppose and probably lived in Aspull. Apparently she was like a second mother to my Great Grandmother when her mother had died and I would love to pass on a couple of photos I have of her if there are any descendants out there. Thank you, Tamara.

    3. I thought the list might like to know that the funeral took place today of the Reverend Canon Kenneth Malcolm Forrest who was Rector of Wigan for 28 years and priest at Wigan Parish Church. Although he retired a few years ago, he was still very much in people's thoughts, and lived not too far away in Standish. The Requiem was held at Wigan Parish Church and it was quite literally standing room only as many of the townspeople attended, along with the Mayor, the Council Leader Lord Smith of Leigh, and the Bishop of Warrington. There was a 10 bell muffled ringing session before the funeral (the bells at this church are among the best in the country) and the church was beautiful. If you have ancestors from Wigan and have never visited the church, it's hard to describe how lovely a place it is, and today it did Malcolm proud. If you can, please spend a few moments to think or pray for Malcolm, who was without doubt one of the kindest people I've ever met. Maggie

    3. Hello Margaret I'm afraid I can be of little help. Even when I tried the old trick of searching for Leddon instead of Seddon (a common Ancestry blooper), nothing obvious turned up in 1841/51. It occurs to me that maybe Seddon was an assumed name - wouldn't be the first man to join the army under a pseudonym. There again he may have been Henry Seddon, but his father John the collier may have been a fictitious adornment for his marriage cert. You didn't need proof and no one so far from home was likely to dob him in. I take it you have considered tracking down his military records? Not my field, but my wife has gained all sorts of fascinating detail about an 18th century militia man ancestor from his marriage and discharge papers etc. Good luck Peter Wood

    3. Margaret There is a lot of information that might help that you have not told us: When did Henry & Elizabeth marry? What was his father's occupation on the M.Cert? What was Elizabeth's father's name & occupation? Where was Elizabeth in 1871 when Henry is apparently an unmarried soldier at Aldershot? In 1871 the birthplace Wardley looks like a mistranscription. It actually appears to be Hendley (if you have the census image compare the H with the H in Hereford, the first e with the e in Sheffield (first line) and the n with the n in Lancaster. So if Siddon=Seddon, and Hendley is probably Hindley, which is in Wigan district, whereas Wardley is in Salford. Regards Peter Wood

    3. You may be interested; there is a chap on the ENG-LAN-BOLTON rootsweb list who has a database of over 75,000 records on the SEDDON surname. It might be worth your while to join the eng-lan-bolton@rootsweb.com list, and make another inquiry there. It helped me to find my Great Aunt and Great Uncle; Sarah Ann SEDDON who married Ernest HUTCHINSON Dec. 4, 1909, at the parish church of St. George, Wigan, Lancashire. Barb, Ontario, Canada.
