    1. [WIGAN] Looking for Flitcrofts and Pendleburys in Wigan
    2. valerie chadwick
    3. Hi List, I see it's been pretty quiet lately. Perhaps we need a roll call to see who is looking for whom. I am researching Flitcrofts and Pendlebury's in the Wigan area. In Bolton it's Marsh, Wilson, Hampson, Berry, Hartley. I'd love to hear from anyone looking for these families. Val c.

    1. [WIGAN] Immigrant Families - Lancashire to Canada
    2. Lynne
    3. Forwarded at the request of the author. -------- Original Message -------- The WorldGenWeb Project is a non-profit, volunteer based organization providing genealogical and historical records and resources for world-wide access. You can learn more about it at http://www.worldgenweb.org/ I am a member of the team and already coordinate several sites within the British Isles project. Currently I am republishing the Southwestern BC (Canada) GenWeb site which will include an "Immigrant Families" Page. If you have a family history web site that concerns ancestors that emigrated from Lancashire to Canada, eventually settling in the province of British Columbia, please send me the URL and a brief description that I can include in my Immigrant Families page. I will also have a "Help Wanted" page to which you can add any 'brickwall' that you might have concerning ancestors who settled in British Columbia. This information could help others searching the same surname and in turn may provide you with more information. So as not to overload the List please contact me off line at anderson.terri71@gmail.com Regards, Terri

    1. [WIGAN] ADMIN - a few announcements
    2. Lynne
    3. Dear Listers, A few small announcements, in case you haven't heard. Apologies if you get multiple copies of this message. - Subscribing to RootsWeb may now involve another step. As a further deterrent to spam, RootsWeb have added another step to the subscription process. Depending upon each list administrator's preferences, every subscription request is either reviewed and approved by the list administrator or a subscription confirmation is sent to the would-be subscriber and the instructions contained in that confirmation message must be followed in order for the subscription to be completed. - "RootsWeb Review", which recently switched from plain text to HTML, will be sent out monthly, rather than weekly (see http://blogs.rootsweb.ancestry.com/newsroom/). If you're not already subscribed to this free newsletter, go to http://newsletters.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ to enter your e-mail address. You can also use that link if you prefer to receive the newsletter in plain text rather than HTML (or vice versa) or would like to subscribe to the free "Ancestry Weekly Journal". - RootsWeb pages are now hosted on Ancestry's servers, so you may see a slight different in the way some URLs appear, but any bookmarked RootsWeb pages should work as usual. We have been told that RootsWeb will continue to be free. See <http://bigfile.rootsweb.ancestry.com/newsroom/?p=111> and <http://bigfile.rootsweb.ancestry.com/newsroom/?p=112> for more information. On a much more personal and very sad note, my father passed away 19 March. Many thanks to you who had expressed your wishes for his recovery. For the past four months I've been very involved caring for my father, which is why you haven't seen many posts from me or notices of LancsBMD updates. I'm gradually getting back to normal (whatever that is!) and will be sending you BMD updates and event info more often. On a positive note, I finally have high-speed Internet access. This necessitated a change in e-mail addresses. If you have my old addresses, lklein@mindspring.com or rwlist.admin@earthlink.net, in your address book, please replace them with rwlist.admin@verizon.net or rwlist.admin@gmail.com. Unless RootsWeb's servers are down, you can also contact me via the LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com address. Best wishes, Lynne

    1. [WIGAN] Newspaper article or Obituary for Benjamin BROWN
    2. Sharron Mavis McKAY
    3. Hi Everyone This is my first posting to this list so I hope I do this right. I have an ancestor who was a railway goods guard in Lancashire. I knew that he died on the 21 January 1883 in Bolton, Lancashire and I suspected that he may have died doing his job. I recently found on the wiganworld cemetery records website that he was killed on the railways. Could someone please tell me how to go about finding an obituary or maybe a newspaper article on how he actually died. Thanking you in anticipation Sharron McKay Esperance Western Australia

    1. [WIGAN] moorside school photo 1937
    2. Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me a bit about Moorside School? I have a photograph of my Grandmother in 'class IV E' at 'Moorside' in 1937. She would have been about 12 years of age. They were not wearing uniforms. Would this have been Primary or High School does anyone know? If anyone has any ancestors/relatives who might be in the photo I would be happy to send it to you. If anyone has any photographs of children/classes in this school around this time (1937-1943?) I would really love to see the photographs also (to see if my Grandmother might be in any others). Thank you, Tamara

    3. I have a John Hayes who immigrated to Fall River, MA in the late 1860's or early 1870's. He was born about 1850 and his parents were John and Mary Hayes. He also had a sister, Elizabeth born about 1847. I have found what I think may be his family in the 1861 UK census and his parents were supposedly born in Wigan. Does this sound familiar to anyone? 3. Hi Eric, I was about to dismiss this because I've never seen Eliza using the name Elizabeth at all, either in the census or on certificates. However I do have the marriage certificate of her second marriage to William GILLIAN and on that her father is named John HODGSON (gardener). So it is possible, and I will keep this information in case it does turn out to be her. Where is Bilinge in relation to Winstanley? Close enough for her to have been baptised there? Thank you very much for this. 3. Hi Jan, I'm 100% certain if this is your Eliza, but there was an Elizabeth HODGSON baptized at St. Aidan's, Bilinge 24/4/1808 to John & Martha Hodgson. Other children:- James baptized 13/10/1799 Martha baptized 18/7/1802 Buried 24/6/1805 at St. Aidan's Ann baptized 11/3/1804 Martha baptized 26/10/1806 Jane baptized 25/3/1810 Plus a possible, Deborah baptized 26/8/1812. I hope this helps. My GGG Grandmother Eliza HODGSON was born in Winstanley, Lancashire in or around 1808 (she died aged 76 in Jun 1884). She married my GGG Grandfather Joseph BONUS, and when I caught up with her on the 1841 census they were living in Oldham and had a child born in Oldham, William, born c1837. My GG Grandmother Mary Ann was born later in 1841. Apart from the 1841 census I have no record of Joseph BONUS at all, where he was born, where or when they married or even when he died. I am assuming Joseph died sometime between 1841 & 1848 because Eliza married William GILLIAN in Oldham in 1849. I have been banging my head on this brick wall for the best part of 2 years and I have just found out that Wigan has a mailing list, so I thought I'd ask if anyone shares my ancestors, or if anyone is able to look up the baptism of Eliza HODGSON in Winstanley or Wigan c1808 and/or the marriage of Eliza HODGSON and Joseph BONUS around 1836. I'm pretty sure they didn't marry in Oldham. Thank you. 1. [WIGAN] Myers and Glover, Hindley
    2. Joyce Lintner
    3. On March 1st 2008, William Henry (Harry) Myers passed away in Oshawa Ont. Canada. He was born 1918 in Hindley Lancashire and his parents were Wm. Frederick Meyers and Madge Glover. I found the obituary in our local paper and will be happy to scan it and send it to anyone who is interested. It is very long and gives lots of information - year of marriage, wife's maiden name, his children's names and grandchildren's names and some other information about his life. A wealth of material for a genealogist. Joyce, in Canada

    1. [WIGAN] HODGSON, Winstanley
    2. Jan Holmes
    3. Hi, Just joined the list in the hope that either someone has my one Wigan link in their tree, or else that someone has access to Winstanley or Wigan PRs and could maybe do a look-up for me? Thank you. 1. [WIGAN] Census
    2. Robert
    3. Hi All Can someone advise what % of the original census has been included in the various census date records.as presented by Ancestry Some counties I have previously checked have in the various census years far less than the reputed population total EG Census Monmouthshire 1861--As I recall, it has only 60% of the possible total population---balance was destroyed or lost I would like to know the odds of success of my research in Lancashire---if a % of the record is missing, the odds lengthen Regards Robert From the Roaring Forties
