    1. [WIGAN] GEORGESON / SIMPSON / Christian Meeting House
    2. Barb Baker
    3. I have a Marriage Certificate for Wilfred GEORGESON and Elsie Mary SIMPSON, both Christian Brethren Missionaries ; Marriage date: 30th July 1930; Marriage solemnized at Christian Meeting House, Rodney Street, Wigan. I have done some searching to find out about the Christian Meeting House (but have not found anything) ; I know that Wilfred G and Elsie Mary later served in Africa as missionaries. Would anyone have information on the Christian Meeting House and the Christian Brethren ? Thank You. Barb, Ontario, Canada bbaker48@sympatico.ca

    1. Re: [WIGAN] Searching for Origins of IRISH Ancestors living in ENGLAND
    2. http://mouldingname.info/ebooks/homelife/0.html homelife of lancashire factory folk during the cotton famine Hi Like you I have irish family who came to Wigan- the McMullens. I only know they are irish due to 1841 census- by 1851 the younger generation were saying they were born Wigan and by 1861 my branch had dropped the Mc, becoming Mullens on their move to Co Durham. I find the e book on the above link a wondersful source of what life was like. Do take the time to read it, if you search there are sevearl sources I believe. I have been luckier with other irish branches tho, if they came to england via Scotland then its definately worth getting bmd certs especially 1850s as full deatils of places of birth parents marriages etc are aoften shown. Likewise if your family has an unusual name then its worth searching Griffiths Valuation if they would have been in ireland then. Other than that, it seems to be guesswork! carol

    2. Hi can anyone point me to a description of what Flux asa cause of death would mean circa1800. The poor souls was a blaecher in the mills. I have found this on an american site circa 1880 and wonder if this would apply or whether special circumstances would apply to a mill worker FLUX - An unnatural discharge of blood or liquid matter from the body. 2. BILL DORGAN
    3. Crosspost Listers: Like many of you my IRISH came over to ENGLAND before and during the Great Famine. Getting them back to their IRISH roots has been a very hard experience. There are no "Passenger Lists" and short of having a notation of their place of origin besides "Ireland" on a Census or on a baptism or marriage certificate in England, it is a short of miraculous to find them. Any suggestions? Be that as it may, can someone direct me to a URL that describes in detail the experience of the IRISH who came to ENGLAND before and during the Great Famine? Thanks for your help! 2. Hello Lynne, I do not have anything to add to your Fitton search, except to tell you i once lived in Farnworth Bolton.Fitton is a well known name there. You may find some relatives to link your find together. This is what happened to me,my grandparents started off in Wigan, then moved around following the building of The Bridgewater Canal and ended up in Farnworth .Your ancestors could quite easily have done the same. I put a message on the Farnworth -Knowhere - board and inside a week i had all the information i needed .Everyone helped fit stuff together for me as i was working through my search.Just give it a try. There is a Knowhere board for each town and surrounding areas. I hope this Helps. For people needing Irish help--Fermanah Gold --is good they have a message board also--- try for other research--- Surname Navigator.-- Failing that send a message to the main library in the place you need--i did this in New york library and witin 3 days i had all i needed to trace my family who went by sea to America in the 30's IF i can be of help to anyone please ask Lynda

    1. [WIGAN] James FITTON of Wigan d.1817
    2. Lynne
    3. Transcribed by me from the London Gazette, Issue 18580, published 29 May 1829: "Pursuant to a Degree of the High Court of Chancery, made in a cause FITTON against GIDLOW, the Creditors of James FITTON, late of Wigan, in the County of Lancaster, Schoolmaster, deceased (who died in or about the month of September 1817), are forthwith to come in and prove their debts before James Stephen, Esq. one of the Masters of the said Court, at his Chambers, in Southampton-Buildings, Chancery-Lane, London, or in default thereof they will be excluded the benefit of the said Decree." It's a shame the first name of GIDLOW doesn't appear, but how nice to find a death date! The only James FITTON I could find on the IGI is the death of a James FITTEN, unfortunately without a specific location and a member submission. Hope this is of use to someone. Lynne

    1. [WIGAN] Horrocks family - cont.
    2. Hi William Horrocks marriage cert arrived today and while no evidence that he is my Anns brother, Im encouraged that he names his dad as John Horrocks occupation Crofter- same as on Anns marriage cert from the same year- 1842. William Horrocks married Ellen Storey 5th june 1842 Pemberton church, both were residing at Pemberton. Ellen gives her age as 18, William says full age- like my Ann (Im starting to think they couldnt do their sums as ages on census seem to vary) Ellens dad is Ralph Storey a Joiner incase anyone has any interest. His family is actually easy to find 1841 living in Scholes area- near my Ann Horrocks. So I now know both William and Ann had a dad called John who was a crofter. They both on one census at least said they were born in Yorkshire and were both in Wigan by 1841. Im (almost) sure I have the right family. So frustrating not to have evidence. I think I will order Mathew Horrocks marriage cert next- Anns boarder 1851 and Williams brother? 1841. At least if I know his dad was also John then the plot is thickening. If anyone can think of anything at all please shouit up- both to get evidence re Ann- an impossibility if Im honest, or to establish who William Horrocks circa 1820 and Mathew Horrocks circa 1830 parents were. 1841 suggests mam and dad were John and Mary and 1851 John and Margaret, and as far as member submissions on IGI go it seems to be Margaret but the more I look the more the submissions seem to be a bit of guesswork. Confused? I am. Thanks Carol - who is definately starting to feel that a whole bunch of Wigan Horrocks could be mine.

    2. Barb
    3. I need help finding a birth certificate for my grandfather's illigitimate son. His name was William Richard last name I'm not sure if at birth he was given his fathers surname of either PUGH or PRICE or he might have been given his mothers surname. The name he used later on in life was PUGH. He was born October 5, 1893 in Wigan, Lancashire and was living with his fathers family in Wales in 1901 and later went to Canada for a short time. He married Minnie Haygarth in West Derby, Liverpool December 10, 1914 (I have the marriage certificate). Can anyone help with finding his birth certificate? I did come up with one but it's wrong. It was William born to William PRICE and Lydia PRICE formally WILLIAMS and I know his parents weren't married and this birth was November 14, 1894 in the district of Aspull. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Barb McKee Vancouver, Canada
