Hi Carol I have recently joined this list as I am researching my gr grandparents who came to Australia from Wigan. I noticed your e-mail re Horrocks. I don't know if this is of interest to you but I have Richard and Elizabeth Horrocks who were witnesses on the marriage certificate of my 4 X gr grandparents. The marriage was of William Barlow and Ellen Atherton. They married on the 2nd July 1849 at St John's Chapel Wigan. Both were living at Wallgate at the time. Regards Barbara Wodonga Vic Australia Researching, Barlow, Weaver, Cherrington, Clarke, Wood, Atherton & Vaughan -----Original Message----- From: eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-lan-wigan-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Carolgriff@aol.com Sent: Thursday, 19 April 2007 8:21 PM To: ENG-LAN-WIGAN@rootsweb.com Subject: [WIGAN] Horrocks in Wigan- and who they married. Hi My enigmatic Ann Horrocks who turns up in Wigan 1841 is starting to gather a family- I think, its all speculation but the pieces are coming together- if anyone is researching any HORROCKS I would be pleased to hear from you- to eliminate if nothing else. Ann married William MCMULLEN 1842. Her dad was John HORROCKS a crofter. By 1848 they were in Ince when their son John MCMULLEN died- the informant was Mary HORROCKS - Im thinking this was Anns mam. William HORROCKS (Anns brother I think) married Ellen STOREY 5 June 1842. Matthew HORROCKS (another brother?) married Catherine COMMACHEE 1Dec 1851. My Ann and William were witnesses. By now they were living at Primrose Hill Wigan. Matthew was soon widowed and married Mary Ann HITCHEN 12 Aug 1855 they and their kids stayed in Wigan- settling in Ince. John HORROCKS (another brother?) married Elizabeth ORMAND 1July 1858. Other HORROCKS siblings are possibly Elizabeth born circa 1833, Maria circa 1834 and Margaret circa 1837. Hope to hear something. carol * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ~~~ Check your e-mail settings. Hi Billie Sorry I must have missed your earlier mail. What a small world cos Ive just looked for your Mary HORROCKS with dad Joseph on 1841 census and see they are on the sames creen as Richard and Elizabeth Horrocks- Im betting Richard and Elizabeth are the witnesses mentioned by Barbara on her email today "I have Richard and Elizabeth Horrocks who were witnesses on the marriage certificate of my 4 X gr grandparents. The marriage was of William Barlow and Ellen Atherton." Again no direct link that I can see to my lot but you never know. And maybe you are connected to Barbara? I will keep this info for sure. carol

On large lists like LancsGen, "roll calls" can do as much damage as good. Approximately 100 subscribers (that's 1/10th of the whole group) unsubbed or bounced off LancsGen since the roll call began, and my InBox was flooded with complaints about the posts, especially about the lack of good subject lines and paltry info included in the messages. More proof that you can't please all the people all the time. Everyone is always welcome and, in fact, encouraged in the Welcome Message to post their Wigan interests. So yes, please, DO post them. Try to use good subject lines -- SURNAME(s), date(s), location(s) -- so that we and anyone browsing or searching the archives will have an idea of the content of your message. "Roll call" in a subject line doesn't really tell anyone much of anything. This is the Wigan mailing list, so please be sure your posts relate to Wigan ancestors. With thanks and best wishes, Lynne
