My husband and I have been working on the St. Elphin Parish Records and Bishops Transcripts for some time now, trying to sort out which Newtons and Stirrups are mine. So many people have the same names that I end up with multiple marriages where husband and wife have the same names that multiple other couples have, and they are having chidlren in the same time period. The IGI has not been any help in this matter, but seems to muddy the water. There are so many that sometimes it is unbelievably difficult, and to help in this we have been forming family group records for all the surnames I know of in my family in Warrington that show up in the Parish Registers: Appleton, Derbyshire & Darbyshire, Jackson, Leigh, Lythgoe, Marsh, Massey, Newton, Sharrocks, Shaw, Stirrup & Stirrop. We started this at about 1810 and have been working backwards in time. Now we are in 1770's with the christening records, although we have not gotten that far with the death and marriage records. I cannot promise that this project is exhaustive--I have skipped a few years and tried to do it another way, then went back to this method. It is time consuming, but very good at helping us determine who belongs to whom. If we can look up something in our data bank for other people on the list, we would be happy to do so. Please make sure the person you are looking for has one of the surnames mentioned above and had a life event (christenings are most likely at this phase) between 1772 and 1810.
