Warrington Training College stood next to the Parish Church and was closed after a disastrous fire in 1924. Contrary to a popular misconception, it was not destroyed by fire, but the cost of re-building the damaged wing was thought to be excessive and the building was subsequently demolished. The College later moved to Liverpool. There is an excellent book " A Window on Warrington" the childhood memories of Peggy Beverley which gives a fascinating insight into life in the Manchester Road / Church Street areas in the 1920's -1930's it's available from the Liverpool & S.W. Lancs. F.H.S. secure on-line shop, see http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/acatalog/Liverpool___SW_L_FHS_Warrington_51.html for orders in the UK and http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/acatalog/Liverpool___SW_L_FHS_Warrington_18.html for overseas I also remember the Blue Back, named, I believe, after the colour of the uniform of one of the local Regiments, it had the distinction of being the only pub in England with that name. I have all the details in a book on English pub names, but as is always the case, "you can never find anything when you want it "!!!" if it comes to light I'll post the relevant details, Joe Griffiths, Warrington Family History Group. > > Message: 5 > Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2007 23:51:29 +0000 (GMT Standard Time) > From: "Jo" <jo@fruitcats.com> > Subject: [LAN-WARR] Training College > To: <eng-lan-warrington@rootsweb.com> > Message-ID: <45E22101.00001B.03364@LOUNGE> > Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset="iso-8859-1" > > It appears that the Training College was actually in Liverpool, but > affiliated to Warrington. > Warrington Training College, Liverpool - http://www.liv.ac > uk/tqsd/collabprov/history.htm > In 1938, Warrington Training College was re-named St Katharine's Training > College.
