Hello Maureen and all, My interest in "The Packet Inn" came about via a letter sent from my G Grandfather Wilhelm Pohl and his wife Christian BLYTHE in 1864 to her father and mother in Scotland. Wilhelm and Christian moved to Warrington from Edinburgh in 1864 and the letter said, "My Dear Father and Mother You will think it strange me never writing you sooner but we arrived all safe at 8 o'clock on Monday night we went to the paket inn but we found no want there she died shortly after uncle her dauther & Husband carry's on the same buisnefs and we stayed there till Wednesday and they were very kind " Of course, I had to try to find The Packet Inn and who was living there. With some help, from Jean on this list, I discovered that John BLYTH lived at the address in 1855 as shown in a directory for that time.I then found him on the 1851 census where he is shown as the publican and born Scotland. He appears to be there until his death in 1855. He was a brother to Christian's father. The census for 1861 shows Thomas POMFRETT as publican. I tried to connect this Thomas with a daughter of John Blyth but with no success so I am still no wiser as to his daughter still being at The Packet House in 1864. I am not certain about the next bit but I have a feeling that at some stage there may have been a Hamlet BOLTON at the address. So there is my interest in the "Packet Inn" cheers, Mag > Hello, Most interested to know that there are other listers with the "Publican Interest. Especially interested to know of John BLYTH via Mag in NZ. Perhaps we could pool our resources (maybe off list) and see what we can come up with. I do not know if Pubs of 1920 was a book or just the title of the research. I also know of someone whose ancestor was at the Packet House in the late 1890s. I did not know it's history went back to mid 1800s. I lived in the Warrington area from birth (1930) to just before WW2. Look forwarde to hearing more. Regards Maureen Qld. Aus.
