Dahlis, How are things near Bowral. A beautiful part of the world, but probably getting a bit overgrown. I used to love the Bong Bong races before they got taken over by yuppies. I'm in Sydney. My wife's ancestors come from Downall Green near Ashton in Makerfield, which is just north of Orford. So I'm familiar with the area. I also run genealogy courses which presupposes I know a bit about family history research. Unfortunately, you didn't say where and what you found about your Peter Worrall. So it's hard to judge if it's absolutely reliable. If it came from 1841 Census for example, there might be an inherent rounding of up to 5 years. If it came from marriage, it would probably be reliable unless a transcription error occurred. If it came from death you are relying on the accuracy and knowledge of the informant. I always like to make such assessments of the source. But you seem to have done the right things. You have looked at LDS library catalogue and found no records for Orford and checked IGI batch site with the same result. It appears then that Orford didn't have a parish church. So you have to look at nearby churches. Using www.multimap.com the nearest church locations that I know are Winwick and Warrington both less than 1.5 miles away. You might like to look at Genuki for Lancashire parishes. I suspect Winwick "parish" was what we would now call a "diocese", the centre of a number of local churches. So a description of Winwick "parish", should show the local areas and churches that it included. Although Winwick online records stop well before 1812, I'm almost certain they are available on fiche or CD. I've been trapped many times when people in UK come up with local data that I can't get in Australia. But you are going to be overwhelmed by the number of Worrall/Worrell records. Try using an asterisk for given name in your searches. Even in the narrow timeframe of 1812 +/-5 years there are over 200. You would need to speed read down the results looking for locations near Orford. For example, there seemed to be significant numbers at Burtonwood, which is about 3 miles away. Any specific addresses would help narrow thing down. But beware!!. My birth details would usually be put as Sydney, which now covers an area of nearly 500 sq miles. But shown as Arncliffe, it's within 1-2 miles. Have you tried surname boards and mailing lists? Don't be too specific. Try looking for Worral relatives in the area at the same time. It often leads to families. Also watch for county borders. If you restrict your search to Lancashire, they may be just in nearby Cheshire. Try also submitted Faamily Trees at www.rootsweb.com You just have to fiddle a bit to eliminate all the superfluous results. But be aware this site wants exact match. So if you search for Orford and they haven't put in anything, it doesn't match. And finally try a variety of searches at Google. Be imaginative. One such search brought up the following. It's obviously a Worral descendant from the area from a branch that went to Canada about 1900. Thank you so much for the helpful responses with information on Orford and suggestions, Stan, Celia, Susan and Peter. Peter, things in the Highlands are wonderful. I am at Exeter, out on the hills so I can avoid the yuppy elements. I found my Peter WORRALL's age and birthplace on the 1851 census. That is the only census I can find him on. In the 1841 census his wife and child are at her parents in Yorkshire but there is no trace of Peter anywhere. I have searched Wales and Scotland 1841 census as well. I have tried different spellings, but there are probably so many ways it could have been spelt incorrectly. I cannot find him in the 1861 cenus either or any after that, or his wife. I found his son John in the 1861 census just before he left for Australia. I know Peter's father's name was John and he was also a carpenter and that Peter gives his birthplace as Lancaster, Orford and that his age given on the 1851 census was 39. And that is where it all rests. I shall follow the suggestions of searching nearby churches for his birth and order the films/fiche in at the local LDS family history centre, I think that is the only place down here that I could do so.
