    3. Hello again list, Still looking for the elusive Samuel Sutton WOOD, who was born abt. 1842 in Warrington (per the GRO index, it appears his birth was registered 4Q1842 in Warrington). Per Warrington parish registers, he was baptized 29 Jan. 1843 at St. Elphins. As of the 1851 Census, he was residing with his widowed mother, Ann WOOD, and two older brothers, Henry and James, at Market Place. His father, Henry WOOD, died 23 Aug. 1849, and Henry is buried in the St. Elphins church cemetery (as well as wife, Ann). Directories from 1838 to 1848 show that Henry WOOD was an earthenware dealer at 10 Market Place, who also ran a day school. I simply cannot find Samuel WOOD on any future census. Would the St. Elphins registers also have record of his death or marriage? If so, does someone have the ability to check the registers? I've tried searching the GRO index, and I've had a hard time making a meaningful search for him given the common nature of his names. I've also asked previously for an 1841 Census lookup for Henry and Ann WOOD. Given the directory, they should be residing at 10 Market Place. I'm particularly in need of Henry's birthplace. As always, any and all help is sincerely appreciated. Lisa Hopp Seattle, WA

    3. Lisa, You've omitted some vital information - birthplaces and years for his mother and his brothers. You also don't say if you have found any of them in later censuses. I suspect one of the following has happened. a) his mother remarried and he is listed under his father in law's surname in 1861 b) his surname has been mis-transcribed (but you would need this for 1861, 1871, 1881 ,1891 etc) c) they moved elsewhere in England or migrated d) they all died (not much chance) So you should be able to find one of the four in 1861 or subsequent censuses. This could provide some clues. I would also check FreeBMD & LancashireBMD for a re-marriage for his mother between 1849-1861. This would depend on her age. I would also try various searches of 1861 census. If Ann has an unusual birthplace, you could do a search for Ann born 18.. at ........... and leave out her surname. You could also search for Ann occupation widow of that age and birthplace. Also try finding his brothers. I would also do a place search of 10 Market Place in 1861. Another wildcard would be to try "Samuel Sutton Wood" in a Google search. The inverted commas mean the whole phrase has to occur together. I also wonder if you may not be too tight in your search criteria. Sometimes "less is best". Hope some of this brings results. Peter in Sydney

    3. Do you have any idea when Samuel died. Did he have a family or are we tying up loose ends? One other thing, given that his mothers maiden name is likely Sutton then we can possibly run into problems with the death being indexed under Sutton not Wood.
