Hello List, If you recognise the name Torpenhow Open Air School which used to be located on Montgomery Hill in Frankby Wirral from around 1945 to around 1995, then perhaps you were there as a pupil or staff member? If not then perhaps you have a relative, friend or neighbour who was at this school? Anyone who attended Torpenhow as a pupil or staff member is invited to a reunion to be held in June, so if you or anyone you know was there and would be interested in attending this reunion please get in touch with me as soon as possible for more details. Some time ago I was able to look up some births etc on what I would now assume was a Lancashire index site where the references were in the main prefixed with "b" or "c" (e.g. 8b/192, 8c/140, 8c/151 etc.) for Liverpool, Oldham, Warrington etc. births. I failed to note the website address at the time, and can no longer find it (isn't that usually the case). Has anyone any ideas please? John N.
Hello, I'm not expecting much from this, a bit of a shot in the dark, but if anyone has any ideas.. I was trying to find which branch of the JERRAM family my lot came from. I have traced back my JERRAM line from my great grandmother Elizabeth (born Regents Park, London, 1849). Her dad was in the army there - John JERRAM, (1811) baptised London but born Codnor Park, Derbyshire, for some reason. Rest of his siblings all born and baptised London. His father was Charles JERRAMS (1778), (illiterate, but at this point they spell his name with an S) also in the army (Coldstream Guards) in London, and I fully expected him to have a Derbyshire birthplace. I cannot find him on the 1841census anywhere. He does not appear to be on FamilySearch. Charles was married to an Elizabeth. However, on the 1851, as a Chelsea Pensioner, he has Hope, Flintshire, Wales for birthplace. No baptism for him or anyone of any similar name there. Now his army records have come through, and they say he was born Warrington, Lancashire. I've had a quick glance at earlier Ancestry census searches, and it doesn't seem to be a common local name in any form (eg Jerom, Jerome) from that area. Charles was a weaver before he joined the Coldstream Guards in 1798, aged 19. If anyone knows of/has come across this name or similar in that area, or can see any connection between the two different birthplaces given, please let me know. I'd love to find a baptism, but it looks like a long haul... Thanks Laura

Hello Tom Yep, Fairfield School was an Infants School, I used to attend there but much after your grandfather (1953-1957). Unfortuatley I haven't got any lists of pupils. Regards Celia
Good evening Listers, I'm trying to make sense of the educational school system in Warrington when my grandfather attended school there, and I wonder if he could have attended Fairfield School. He was born in 1898, so probably started school around 1904, and then emigrated to the U.S. in 1913. I have checked the list of pupils at the Parochial National School on Church Street, and located his younger brother there, but not my grandfather. In any event, I'm quite sure that my grandfather's school was connected in some way with St. Elphin's Parish Church. Can anyone tell me whether the Fairfield School was an infants school? If that's the case, then there's a good chance that he may have attended that school, which was also connected with St. Elphin's. Has anyone come across directories of students for Fairfield School? Thanks again, Thomas Birchall
Dear Listers, I needed to make one correction regarding Thomas Birchall the Fishmonger from Church Street . . . he had a long moustache, not a long beard. I'm pretty sure there must be people on the list who remember this pillar of the Church Street community back in the 1950s. Don't be shy, and jot down a few lines from your memories. Thank you again, Thomas Birchall V Arlington, TX
Hi Sue There is only 1 entry as follows 5th July 1809 Robert CLAYTON and Ann Merial RUTTER both of this Parish Banns published 18th, 25th June, 2nd July M Gs CHIPPINDALL Curate Witnesses: Mary LOWE, TW Regards Celia
Do you have any Rutter families on that Winwick fiche Celia? Cheers Sue Kinsella
Good evening Listers, Its hard to stop a train that is still rolling, and thanks to the bright minds and resources that are ours on the list, I have discovered something very interesting. I sent the following question recently to one of our listers: My g.g. grandfather Thomas Birchall had a shop at 91 Church Street in 1871, and then a shop at 72 Church Street in 1881, and then a shop at 80-82 Church Street in 1891, and finally a shop at just 82 Church Street in 1901. Looks like he moved all over the same block for 30 years! I'm curious now whether the 91 Church Street is a building that is still standing. It would be across the street (odd number address), . . . . Now upon some examination, one lister found that a 'Thomas BIRCHALL' a Fishmonger, lived at 91 Church Street in 1901. All right, now here is the really interesting fact. I have been coming across this Fishmonger who carries my name, for about 1 year since I joined the list. In fact, some listers still remember this man when he was more elderly in the 1950s, still selling his fish down Church Street, and apparently had a shop right there. He has been described as an older gentleman by that time with a long white beard. Does anyone else remember this fellow? OK, now I discovered living cousins in Warrington this past year who tell me that we are related to the fishmonger, but they didn't know how. NOW I discover that he is living at my g.g. grandfather's old shop at 91 Church Street in 1901 (my g.g. grandfather had been there 30 years previously in the 1871 census.) NOW, do we have any takers as to how this Thomas Birchall, Fishmonger, ties in with Thomas Birchall, my g.g. grandfather? My gg. grandfather was married to Alice Howard, and they had 7 children (Elizabeth Ann (b.1861), Mary (b.1863), Alice (b. around 1863), Emily (b. 1871), Thomas (born 1865), Joseph (1873), Victoria, (b.1876), and Edward (b.1879). Still trying to tie up this one. Thank you for your interest, Thomas Birchall V Arlington, TX
Hi Peter and list, This is what I have on my BRETHERTON family. My ancestor is Richard Bretherton born 1807 in Warrington. He married Frances Lilian DICKINS in Chelsea in 1835. They were in London for the birth of Louisa in 1838 but in 1849 were on their way to Australia. I don't have them on the 1841 census, hopefully when it comes online with Ancestry we'll find them. From the Vital Records we found the christenings of five children including our Richard. Richard's parents were Richard Bretherton and Mary Wilson. Richard and Mary Bretherton had children Jesse and Samuel baptized 1805 Warrington, Richard in 1807, then William 1809 and Sarah 1811. There is a marriage for a Richard to Mary Willson at Winwick in 1790 on the IGI but I'm not sure if these are the same people. If it is them, then there should have been more children between 1790 an 1805. Possibles - I found a marriage on the IGI of a Jessie Bretherton to Elizabeth GIBSON in 1829 in Warrington - they had a daughter Agnes. There is also a marriage of William to Mary Ann WRIGHT in 1830 in Warrington and children William, Ann and Jane. And a marriage of a Sarah Bretherton to Samuel CHRIMES in 1828 in Warrington. I know Mary Wilson is Richard's mother as she is mentioned on a couple of documents so that's not a problem, but there is absolutely no other information. Parish records may at least give additional information. Thank you so much for any help. Hello Lee I have looked on my fische for Winwick PRs and found some BROTHERTON/BRATHERTON people a little earlier than you asked for but just might belong to your family. I also found your marriage of Richard and Mary 1790. 22nd September 1790 Richard BROTHERTON and Mary WILLSON both of this parish Banns published 22nd, 29th August and 5th September Witnesses: RC and John CROSS 24th December 1759 Peter BROTHERTON (signs BRATHERTON) and Ann Taylor Both of this parish Banns published 2nd, 9th and 16th December Witnesses: Thomas HART and Mary TAYLOR 22nd October 1758 John BROTHERTON and Ann ROSBOTTOM Both of this Parish Banns published 17th, 24th September and 1st October Witnesses: John EDWARDSON and Peter BRATHERTON 21st August 1756 Thomas HEART (signs HART) and Eleanor BROTHERTON Both of this Parish Banns published 3rd, 10th and 17th October Witnesses: John LOW and John DICKENSON 16th August 1755 John DICKENSON and Margaret BROTHERTON Both of this parish Banns published 31st August and 7th, 14th September Witnesses: James LOWES and George ALLENS Regards Celia
Lee, There are literally hundreds of Bretherton families in Lancashire in the 1881 Census. If you select those living specifically in Warrington the numbers come down. You really need to provide some specific names, dates and locations of your ancestors. If you look up Hugh Wallis in Google and follow the prompts to Warrington, you can look up the available IGI records. Then just click on the batch number. But these start to be phased out with official registration after 1837. You can get some other data from sites like FreeBMD and Lancashire BMD, but these are not complete. Otherwise check with your local LDS Centre who may be able to order in appropriate microfiche. But the best way to go is put some data on the list. You'll be amazed by the wealth of knowledge of the listers. Peter
Good morning from Australia, I am seeking information on my BRETHERTON family from Warrington and wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where to access parish records for the area? Thanks so much. Lee
Hello Tom On the back of my map of 1905 72 Church Street lists Robert ROTHWELL Stationer and Tobacconist. The same person is listed at this address in my directory of 1908. Regards Celia
Hello Tom In my directory it lists The General Wolfe as 84-86 Church Street, a Samuel J BEAMAN Victualler. Regards Celia
Thanks to the directory assistance of one of our listers, I have pinpointed the location of my g.g. grandfather's hardware store on Church Street. It turns out that the General Wolfe pub (which today is apartments and behind it lies an older person's home) is located at 84 & 86 Church Street. That means that the location of my g.g. grandfather's hardware store at 82 Church St. was immediately next to the General Wolfe pub, which must have been very convenient for that ale-loving generation in my family! (I'm content with my teetotaler position!). In any case, that address is now part of a large parking lot, but I'm grateful for the chance to know exactly where it stood. Another family residence stood at 72 Church Street, but I'll save that hunt for another day. Thank you for helping me to track down the family living / working residence! Tom A. Good Friday and Happy Easter to All, Thanks to a friend who has sent a very helpful booklett entitled, "Church Street" by H. Wells, I suspect that the Star Kinema, which was opened from 1914-1956 (does anyone remember this early cinema in town?) was probably built on the site where my g.g. Grandfather's Hardware store stood around 1905. Can anyone locate the address of the old Star Kenema, which was located right next door to the old General Wolfe pub? My g.g. Grandfather's store was located at 82 Church Street, which may have been located in a building which stood in the middle of the location of the Star Kenema. Does anyone know the address of the building which used to house the General Wolfe? If I remember correctly, I think it is 86 Church Street or so. Thanks to all, Thomas Birchall Arlington, TX
I am seeking information on the RYLANDS family of Warrington. They may be related to the RYLANDS Bros Ltd. 1805-1955 who were wire manufactuters. None of the family now live in the district. A Welsh family named HARRIS from Pontypool may have married into this family in abt 1930. Olive BODEN

William Samuel FIELD was born there in 1825 and was married to a Jane (Unknown) born in 1831.
