Dear List My grandma's birth certificate names her birthplace as 77 Catherine Street, Warrington If I look at a modern map, I see it as two 'bits' of road, and a search on Google shows commercial properties in one section. Can anyone tell me if it really was one complete road in days gone by and has it been re-developed. Are there any pictures online anywhere that I might see what it was like? Many thanks Neil
Hello Neil In my Directory of Warrington 1908 the Head of Household for 77 Catherine Street is William FITTON and a Mrs FITTON Shopkeeper. Regards Celia

Good afternoon I have hit a brick wall, and would like some help to get over it. The person I am looking for is Philip GLEAVE born 3 Apr 1811 in Stockport, Cheshire, England, and baptised 2 Jun 1811. He was living in the Stockport area upto 1838 where he worked as a Hair Cutter, then dissapears. I have a possible link in Bristol when a Rosamond GLEAVE was born 2 Aug 1849 her parents are Philip GLEAVE and Elizabeth GLEAVE (nee BULKLEY). Philips mother was called Rosamond, which is why i think this is my Philip. His brother William GLEAVE born 24 Jan 1807 in Heaton Norris, also a Hair Cutter lived at 33 Buttermarket Street, Warrington, between 1851 and 1871. Has anyone come across Philip in their research, or has any info on William. Many thanks, Chris, Stockport _________________________________________________________________ MSN Hotmail is evolving check out the new Windows Live Mail http://ideas.live.com

I have almost completed a one name study of this rather rare surname found almost exclusively in the area around Ashton in Makerfield for over 500 years. Occasionally, single families moved to Cheshire or another to USA, but they have largely stayed in the one area. I high percentage of female births plus a high rate of infant mortality has restricted the known descendants to a handful of individuals. I have a database of nearly all IGI and quarterly indexes, together with all census records. I would love to hear from anyone who has links to branches of this family. If you know a Downall, please have them contact me. Peter
I have a family born to James HARDMAN and Hannah POUNTAIN. 1. James William HARDMAN (born Weaverham 1851 - 1936) 2. George HARDMAN born 1853 in Weaverham, Cheshire 3. Ann HARDMAN born in 1855 in Great Singleton, Lancashire 4. Margaret HARDMAN born in 1858 in Great Singleton, Lancashire 5. Thomas HARDMAN (1861 - 1897) 6. Hannah HARDMAN born in 1863 in Great Singleton, Lancashire According to the FreeBMD site, David BANKS married Ann HARDMAN in the December 1878 quarter, in the district of Fylde, which fits well with their eldest son having a middle name of Hardman, and being born in 1879. The family were on the 1881 census, at 290 Knutsford Road, Latchford, Cheshire, which is near Warrington. David BANKS and his wife Ann were the parents of 7 children all born in the Latchford area of Warrington district. : 1.. Walter Hardman BANKS born 1879 2.. Annie BANKS born September 1880 3.. Alice BANKS born 1882 4.. Herbert BANKS born 1885 5.. Ernest BANKS born 1889 6.. Thomas BANKS born 1892 7.. Rowland BANKS born 1894. John This looks about right My Mum didn't really know much about her Aunt's and Uncle's but two she recalls are Amy and Annie, and her Grandfather's name was John. Joseph, my Grandfather I have noted as born 'about 1888' so 1901 - 11 is roughly right. Louisa Birchall, my Grandmother, was Joseph's second wife, we know little about the first, for a long time the 'family secret'. Mum didn't find out for ages that her eldest brother Sidney was in fact her half-brother (or should that be step?!) Only piece of information I have is that her Surname was Gladwell. My husband and I have been working on the St. Elphin Parish Records and Bishops Transcripts for some time now, trying to sort out which Newtons and Stirrups are mine. So many people have the same names that I end up with multiple marriages where husband and wife have the same names that multiple other couples have, and they are having chidlren in the same time period. The IGI has not been any help in this matter, but seems to muddy the water. There are so many that sometimes it is unbelievably difficult, and to help in this we have been forming family group records for all the surnames I know of in my family in Warrington that show up in the Parish Registers: Appleton, Derbyshire & Darbyshire, Jackson, Leigh, Lythgoe, Marsh, Massey, Newton, Sharrocks, Shaw, Stirrup & Stirrop. We started this at about 1810 and have been working backwards in time. Now we are in 1770's with the christening records, although we have not gotten that far with the death and marriage records. I cannot promise that this project is exhaustive--I have skipped a few years and tried to do it another way, then went back to this method. It is time consuming, but very good at helping us determine who belongs to whom. If we can look up something in our data bank for other people on the list, we would be happy to do so. Please make sure the person you are looking for has one of the surnames mentioned above and had a life event (christenings are most likely at this phase) between 1772 and 1810. Hi list Does anyone have, or can put me in the right direction, to obtain the Parish records of St. James of Latchford Warrington in between 1900 and 1912 Keith
Laura-- Thank you for all of the super-sleuthing. I agree that the "Margaret Wood" living with Percy and May Wood in 1901 is likely her step-sister. I tried searching the indexes also (but cannot see the images as I don't have a subscription), and I didn't turn up anything for a possible "Margaret Wood". Thanks again from stormy Seattle!
