Is it possible for someone to look at a marriage that took place in the March 1/4 of 1864 in St Elphins of Sarah Ann Cattrall to James Fletcher. I would like to know if the brides father was Samuel Cattrall. Any help would be relay appreciated. Georgina --------------------------------- New Yahoo! I have a couple of photos taken in 2002 showing the Ring o' Bells, Church Street if they are of any interest to Maureen. One of which also shows the church house next door and St. Elphins. Sadly there are cars around but it gives the essence of the area. Angie
Hi, Many thanks to Stan for the information on the Ring a bells. I have a vague memory of the Pub and the church alongside. Did not know as St Elphins but as Warrington Parish church...Also remember some small white painted shops in Church Street - on the opposite side of the street to the Church - one very small general shop was run by a lady called IDDON - I went to school with her daughter Jean. I imagine all these old buildings will have gone. Last time I was in Warrington (1984) I had difficulty finding my way around - and was surprised to see thet "Oliver Cromwell" had been moved from his stance opposite the Packet House in Bridge Street. Thank you again for the information. Best regards Maureen near Brisbane where we have the Q.E.11 in port. --------------------------------- Need a quick answer? Hello, I would be most interested to have any photos that listers may have. Is there a www. where the interest is in Warrington Pubs ?. I would so much like a photo of the Packet House Inn - I remember it well and have an artist's impression ot the "Tudor Room" which was added around 1935 when the pub was modernised. As a girl my Grandmother Louisa M Fair would take me to Bowling Greens at various Pubs - she belonged to the Lady Victuallers Bowling Club. Most of her friends were fellow Publicans - the Mullins Family at the "Old House at Home" included. --------------------------------- Expecting? Get great news right away with email Auto-Check. There's a picture of the Ring o' Bells as it is now at a site called 'Olde Worlde Pubs'. I'm pleased to see that in updating it many of the original features of panelling, low ceilings etc have been retained, though it is now 'open-plan'. I'd forgotten the beer garden, which I don't recall ever being used. One can imagine these gave its workers, one of whom until 1955 was my uncle Arthur Smith, a wire drawer, a thirst that the Ring o' Bells tried hard to slake. It is in the foreground (on a viewer's right hand) of pictures of the church back to the 18th century, and was originally, I believe, a coaching inn, just before the road left the old centre of Warrington based on Church St. As recently as 25+ years ago the pub retained many of its original features, small rooms, low ceilings, a 'snug' bar and, if I recall rightly, an 'off-license', a small room accessed directly inside the pub door where children could collect ale when sent by their parents. I think the pub was being stripped out and 'modernised' at the time I last visited it, which was probably in 1980, when my dad died - it had been one of his locals and ditto of his family, who lived at the top of Howley Lane, just a stone's throw away. When this area was packed with terraced houses, both 'down Howley' and across the road in the wen of Streets off School Brow, many of whose tenants worked at Rylands's, it must have had a good regular trade, though it must be said there were a lot of other pubs within walking distance - the Brickmakers' Arms on School Brow, the General Wolfe in Church St, and the Marquis of Granby a little further along Church St, and others in the near vicinity. There's a photo of church and pub circa 1955 in the Frith Collection book 'Warrington: Photographic Memories', by Janice Hayes, p. 47. I don't know if this picture is on the Frith website, but it's worth checking. The pub looks little different from its appearance in 18th-century prints, some of which are surely in the Warrington Museum collection. Hi Jo, I would do the admin for you if you like. I am currently running a quiet Rootsweb surname list, and this one doesn't seem too busy for me to cope with if you'd consider me. Regards Neil

Hello listers, your friendly admin here. I've a dilemma... I'm emigrating to the sunny (not) climes of Southern Ireland within the next few months (probably end-April), and might not have internet connection for awhile. Is there anyone out there who'd be willing to host this mailing-list whilst I am off-line? There's not a lot to do, just check on bounces' and advise people if they can't figure out what to do, unsub etc. Hoping for a kind soul to answer, but not holding my breath, Jo

You need to watch out for alternative spellings of Thomson. I have a James Thomason in my father's maternal lineage in Warrington, and I know that there were variant spellings of the family name. hi, I am wondering if anyone else on this list is looking for links to a family of PRESTONs, living in warrington from around early 1850,s,, my gt gt grandfather was a WILLIAM PRESTON, he came over to england from galway ireland, and in 1859 he married a MARGARET KELLY she was also from galway. their daughter MARY ELLEN was my gt grandmother. WILLIAM was the son of MARTIN PRESTON, of who I know nothing. I know that my WILLIAM married 3 times, but stayed in warrington until his death. does any of this ring any bells? if so, would love to hear from you. regards maggi _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Hello Ian According to my Directory 1908 there are just 2 pubs listed with prefix Blue, The Blue Bell 27 Horsemarket Street which is still there and the Blue Lion Hotel Market Place which is no longer there. Not sure about the Imperial (we used to call it The Imp), perhaps somebody else can tell you about that one. Regards Celia
