Hi all, maybe a silly question ... But ... can anyone tell me whether there was a war on during 1891 - 1901 ? I know of War of The Roses and WW1 and WW11 ... I am trying to make sense of why our ancestor Thomas BRAITHWAITE born abt 1861 (baptized Dec 1861) would not have been found on census after 1891. Family say he immigrated to USA or Canada. An uncle of one of our great uncles, invited him to work for him in the holidays and he would therefore pay for his university tuition. This particular uncle ended up attaining his BA degree in Ontario, Canada. I can only think the uncle must have come to Canada ... but ... can find no trace. Can anyone help ? The family hailed from Warrington. I have tried contacting the library there, but no reply. I am frustrated and do not know where to turn. This Thomas was a tailor. I have put posting on the list 2005 and just recent (in fact this am). We are visiting UK this mid year and I would love to try and find something before we do this. Regards Desiree Calgary Canada

In family letters he is mentioned as being spoken of in a "hush hush way". Thomas (* 15 December 1861) was a tailor by trade and after his mother's death, left home (Canada or USA). His father stayed behind living and supporting himself. Father : James BRAITHWAITE ~ 15 August 1828, Warrington, Lanc Mother : Margaret (SPARKS - Frodsham Cheshire) ~ 21 October Frodsham, Cheshire - (Margaret's Father : Joseph SPARKS) Thomas had other brothers and sisters : Mary Ellen, Joseph, Dinah, Annie, Alice, Thomas's father was reared by his grandfather. Is there any advice or assistance for me please, in locating our "elusive" Thomas ? We have touched base today with more BRAITHWAITE family members whilst on our holiday and all seem to originally hail from Yorkshire. I have many missing pieces and would like to fix these. Does anyone know the original origins of the BRAITHWAITE/BREATHERD family. I only know a brief bit of how they came from Scotland to Yorkshire. Can anyone shed any light on these questions above. Apologies for the lengthiness of this query but I have tried to set it out for easy reading. Kind Regards Desiree Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Kristina, As far as I know all the marriages and most of the christenings for that period are in the IGI ( www.familysearch.org) . There does seem to a period about 1800 where there's only female baptisms there and there are no burials. If you live within travelling distance of Warrington the Warrington Library have microfilm copies of all the local church registers. It's a small frielndly library and I can recommend it. I think the original registers are in Chester Record Office but I'm not sure. Manchester Central Library also has copies some of the registers for St Elphin's; it has transcripts of some that were written by the Lancashire Parish Record Society but have not yet been published. They are not on open shelves so you need to phone before your visit to arrange to see them. If you visit their web site you'll get more information.(google manchester central library) Otherwise you can contact the Family History Centre at your nearest Mormon Church; they can borrow microfilm copies which you can view. Hello List, I have just subscribed to this list & am new to lists so please bear with me. Can anybody help? I am researching my family tree & have been for quite a few years. I have been stuck looking for 1 baptism for yrs & despite some trips to Manchester & Chester I have found it. My ancestor Edward NEWTON was b c1821/2. He was born in Warrington according to the 1861 census & in 1871 more specfically listed the place of Wilderpool. I have searched Warrington & some Wilderpool records found in Chesters record Office to no avail. I only know that his father was George Newton. I have not found them on the 1841 census - in 1846 he married in Salford. I believe they were non Conformists & ? may have been German Jews & rumour has it that they were from Newton- Le Willows. What & where do I look next?? Regards Jackie Is it approiate to post questions like this to these types of lists?
Hi, Do any of you know how can I get christening, death and marriage records for St Elphins with date range 1750-1809? I am very new to this so please have patience with me! Kristina
Many thanks to Stan Smith and Sue Kinsella for their replies to my query. I am now going to order a microfilm of Muster Books into my local LDS, where "fingers crossed" I will find my John McQUADE (McQUEED) who was the father of Charles b.1803 as found in St. Elphins Baptism records. Would love to hear from anyone having information of the McQUADE family from Warrington. Hello list! Like all of us, I have used a lot of family myth and lore to help me find solid facts to support events and relationships in my family tree. There is usually a morsel of truth somewhere in a story handed down to me if the layers of it can be peeled away to expose it. It is through one particular story surrounding my Sleddall family that I've been able to unearth many new details which correct previous misunderstandings. I have been searching (without much success) for my gr-gr grandmother, Mary Theresa Sleddall, in her childhood. She was born 24 April 1842 to Thomas Sleddall and Mary Sewell in Carlisle. No matter how far flung the descendents of my family are now, we all were told that Mary Theresa was from a wealthy family, disinherited for marrying beneath her. Mary Theresa's father, Thomas Sleddall, *was* a wealthy "Gentleman" of some standing from the town of Kendal. Thomas' older brother, John Sleddall, used his fortune to build the Sleddall Almshouses in Kendal,! as well as support other philanthropic causes. John Sleddall died without having children. It was always the supposition that Mary Theresa's father was John Sleddall, and she should have been heir to his money. When in fact, this inheritance wasn't necessarily due to her because her father was *not* John Sleddall. Mary Theresa's father, Thomas Sleddall, died 6 October 1843 as a result of an accidental overdose of laundanum administered by his wife Mary. So, Mary, who was pregnant with her second child (named Elizabeth), was a young widow left to care for the infant Mary Theresa. I have found Mary Sewell Sleddall on the 1851 Census (surname misspelled Sleddale) in Botchergate, Carlisle living with an infant daughter Ann. I believe Ann was an illegitimate daughter since no father was named on the birth certificate. There is no sign of Mary Theresa and her sister Elizabeth in 1851. Later that year, infant Ann died. As of the 1861 Census, Mary Sewell Sleddall is still residing in Botchergate, Carlisle, now with son John William. I believe John William is also an illegitimate child since no father was named on his birth certificate. Mary Theresa does re-appear, but in Warrington as a confectioner's apprentice in Market Gate. Still no sign of sister Elizabeth. Mary Theresa and Elizabeth married in Warrington. Mary Theresa to Henry Wood on 24 May 1868, and Elizabeth to Frederick Tongue in 1876. I don't think these two young, single women would make their way to Warrington from Carlisle without something bringing them there. And this is where the family lore comes in. I was told that Mary Theresa was raised in a convent. Maybe there was a convent in Warrington where the girls spent their childhood? I would presume their mother felt incapable of raising the girls without a husband and placed them there? I have found a marriage entry on the GRO index for Mary Sleddall in Carlisle, 4Q1864. I am expecting that certificate at any time. However, I don't think the marriage certificate will give me anything to further the story of Mary Theresa. Does anyone on this list have a suggestion as to what happened to Mary Theresa? Why she doesn't appear on the 1851 Census? How she could re-emerge in Warrington as a 17 year old girl working as an apprentice? I hope this story wasn't too long-winded that you listers gave up reading after the first paragraph!
