Doreen, Thanks for your e-mail. My understanding from a cousin of my wife is that Schofield was Jane's maiden name. In 1881 she was married to an Oldham, although he is not listed on the return, so he may have been away form home that night. She had a son, Robert, in 1859 but was unmarried according to family knowledge. If she doesn't show up in 1851 as Jane Schofield, it could be that Schofield was a married name.
