Hi Doreen We live in Cambridge and unfortunately do not have access to the 1851 Manchester census but thanks for the thought. Hi John, Re: 1841 census for Middleton. There are about 10 pages on the film for the Middleton area that are illegible. I may be mistaken, but think this is the Bowlee area and part of Rhodes. (The whole of the 1841 was recorded in pencil, which had unfortunately faded even before filming). The CD version seems to be the same, but also may not contain the whole of the Tonge area. There appears to be some pages missing, but the main Middleton pages are not too bad. Have you used the surname index at all? (available from Lancs FH & HS). Do you know which area your Hiltons are from, as you say you are also searching Manchester, which is a huge place. Do census records from 1861 onwards give any specific area? I have looked for a Robert Hilton recently in Middleton (1841) and not found him - perhaps for someone on this list? (Cannot locate my notes). He was most likely to have been on the illegible pages. The 1834/5 Middleton Trade Directory doesn`t show a John Hilton, dyer. (have this at home plus some other yrs). Do you have the marriage record for John and Elizabeth? P.S. The 1851 census has around 90 different Hilton families in Middleton!!
