    3. Several colleagues on this site have mentioned checking their full or partial census indexes for Lancashire, and I wonder whether they could tell the rest of us what is available commercially. I have a standing order with S&N Genealogy for all their UK census CDs (all counties) as published, but the lack of name indexes is a problem. For Lancashire the census images for 1861, 1871, 1891 and 1901 are available, but only that for 1891 has a name index (still incomplete) on CD for five pounds. S&N are also making access to in-progress online indexes available to subscribers. The only other published index of which I am aware are the printed ones of the LFH&HS for 1851. The LDS 1881 transcript is very useful and self-indexing (and contains its share of errors). I'd welcome learning what indexes are available for Lancashire. 3. Hi Edward, In addition to the census indexes Doreen has mentioned The LFH&HS have surname indexed various towns. You will find a list of available fiche for sale via the web page at http://www.lfhhs.org.uk/shop/fiche/index.htm These indexes obviously take a great deal of time to compile and to check, but volunteers at most branches of the society attempt to index their own area, many months of work in districts with large populations. As a member of the LFH&HS you should have received a printed list of fiche available in one of your "Lancashire" magazines.
