John, 1. Out of curiosity I have just checked Edward Baines' "History, Directory and Gazetteer, of the County of Lancaster..." (vol 2 dated 1825), which has the following Hilton entry under Middleton:- p.430. Jonathan Hilton, mfr.; h. Church street. Such early directories are very selective, of course, being largely limited to trades (with some "gentry" etc). 2. By the way, a couple of years ago I had details of the Brickmakers Index, run by David Cufley somewhere in the UK, but cannot lay my hands on it. May be worth a Web search for your Humphries of Chester.
