    1. A magic moment.

    3. Hi, A couple of weeks ago I overcame one of the brick walls in my family history. Alice Wilson appears on the 1841 census in Harpurhey with two boys and no husband. Not much to go on. She doesn't appear on any later census so I checked whether she had died or re-married. She had re-married in the 1840s and the certificate gave her maiden name, Worsley, and her father's name, Peter. (I posted a question about him at the time). She was then easy to find under her new married name on the later censuses, which showed her birthplace, Blackley. I already knew of the Worsley family of Blackley. Robert Worsley had been the landlord of the Pleasant Inn, Crab Village, Blackley in the late 1800s and his descendants were still there in 1901. Checks on a few genealogy websites suggest that Robert Worsley's grandfather was a Peter Worsley. I've found two Peter Worsleys, with families, in Blackley in the early 1800s, but I haven't yet established if Alice's and Robert's lines are from the same Peter. Even if they're not, there's probably a connection a few generations further back. So, why should I want to link my Worsleys with those at the Pleasant Inn? 'My' Peter Worsley's gt-gt-gt-grandson, my dad, married the daughter of the landlord of the Pleasant Inn in 1950 and I was born there. It could be that both my mum's and dad's families have, in different centuries, been tenants of the Pleasant Inn. Finding that possibility was one of those magic moments that make all the time and effort of family history research worth while and was great Christmas present. Enjoy your Christmas, Dom O'Malley. P.S. Shhh, don't tell my Mum and Dad. They still live near the Pleasant and this information is going to be a Christmas Day surprise.
