    3. I recently joined the Lancsgen list and submitted the query below, in reply to which someone suggested I try the Middleton list with the query. So here it is, with my apologies to anyone who subscribes to both lists. "My involvement with Lancashire is limited. My gg grandfather Abraham SIMCOCK was born in Staffordshire (Biddulph - Horton area) in 1814/1816, and married there in 1842. He seems to have moved to Heywood, Lancs shortly afterwards, because later (1871, 1881) census data records four children born in Heywood - Abraham jnr (1845), Sarah (1853), Martha (1855), and Lettice (my great grandmother) in 1857. By 1871 Abraham snr was an earthenware dealer and a widower living in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, but the family seems to have stopped off in Pembroke on the way to Merthyr because Abraham jnr was married to a local girl there in 1866. The reason for the gap between births (1845 - 1853) is unknown to me - perhaps there were some children who died, or perhaps a first wife who died and a subsequent remarriage. At any rate, it seems certain that the family was in Heywood in 1851, and may have been there in 1861. I would be most grateful if someone with access to census information could provide details or even an index listing for 1851 and, if relevant, 1861. Even an estimate of the population of Heywood around 1850 would be helpful in letting me know how much of a search I am facing if/when I order the census film through our local LDS centre. I would also be interested in information on other Simcocks born in Staffordshire (Leek/Biddulph/Horton area), particularly a Joseph Simcock who seems to have been married in Leek, Staffordshire at the same time as Abraham. It is possible that more than one element of the family moved to Heywood." Sincerely, Bryan Andrew, Ottawa, Canada.

    3. Hi Bryan, The Heywood & Birtle 1851 surname index for Piece HO107/2213 has just one SIMCOCK folio in 412. An area of Heywood is on HO107/2213 but unfortunately I do not have an index for that or for 1861. Sorry I can not do a look up for you over the next couple of weeks but if you have not found the information you need by the end of the month I will be happy to help. There are some Simcocks recorded as born in the Bury Registration district on the FreeBMD pages. . date/Surname/ First name(s)/ District Vol Page ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Jun 1845 SIMCOCK Abraham Bury L 21 348 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1847 SIMCOCK Hannah Bury L 21 341 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Dec 1847 SIMCOCK * Bury 21 263 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps Kind regards Sylvia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "bryan.andrew" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 8:43 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Simcock in Heywood > I recently joined the Lancsgen list and submitted the query below, in reply to which someone suggested I try the Middleton list with the query.
