    1. [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Elton
    2. Hello, Who could tell me where is ELTON in Lancashire ? John BOOTH and Jane JACKSON married in 1866 in Castle Croft Chapel, Elton, district of BURY, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Independents . What does Independent mean in this case , I thought they were methodists, is it the same thing? Can someone tell me who lived 9 Webb Street and 144 Bolton Road in Elton in 1861 an 1871.These are the adresses the bride and groom gave for the marriage but they both lived in Middleton. As somebody got a map of Elton? Thank you very much. Joanne

    3. Hello, Elton is a district of Bury West of the Town Centre and bounded roughly by Bolton Rd, ( A58 ) on the South Western Edge and Tottington Road, ( B623 ) to the North Western Edge. Independents were exactly that, they were run by the membership, for the membership. They did not believe in being run by Bishops ( the Episcopalians ). Most joined the Congregationalist Union, but some including the Independent Methodists, remained separate. The Methodists and Congregationalists had much in common, but the principal difference is that the Congregationalists appointed a Minister for their Church's whilst most Methodists adopted the circuit principle where a group of Ministers travelled round all the Churches giving the necessary services at each. Moreover the Methodist Ministers were moved to a new circuit after two to three years. In the latter half of the 19th Century many Methodist Preachers took up appointments with Independent Congregationalist Churches because they preferred to be more involved in the running of the Church and to have the greater stability in their home life than permitted by the Methodists. .
