Dear Rosemary, For the first time in 2years on the list a relative has got in touch - wonderful! Lawrence Styles was my paternal grandmother Bertha's brother. She was the oldest of the 7 children and married Fred Stansfield on 1 Feb 1913 at St John's Thornham, near Three Pits. Both families lived at Three Pits then (numbers 2 and 18). Fred's mother, Emma worked at Hopwood Hall. My father, Harry, aged 89, who lives with me, remembers walking to Three Pits from Burton Street in the centre of Middleton where the family moved in, I think, 1916. His older sister Nora, born in 1913, died of meningitis at Three Pits in 1914. I did a recce in Middleton 2 or 3 years ago and the houses at Three Pits have been replaced by a modest terrace of houses parellel to the main road, and set back from it, not on the same alignment shown old maps. They were originally three sides of a square, facing onto open country on the 1910 map. The allotments where my Dad recalls Samuel Styles, (Bertha and Lawrence's father), grew prize geraniums, may be on the site of what is now a nursery. I'd be thrilled to exchange further information if you contact me off list at hathorkath@aol.com All the best Kathy Stansfield
