I am trying to find where William Thornley who died in q/e Dec 1871 was buried. In April 1871 he was living at St Leonards Square, Middleton. Does SKS know where the cemeteries are in Middleton and who I can contact to find out if he was buried there. thank you Margaret
Hi Margaret, William Thornly is buried in the Old Cemetery at Middleton. This is the cemetery which lies around graveyard 3 at St Leonards Church. William Thornley. Married. Age 56 yrs. New Lane, Middleton. Buried 2 Nov 1871. Grave B144. I`m indexing these and the others in the same plot up to now (am only up to 1886) are: Esther Alice Thornley. Age 9 yrs 9 Mths. Oldham Road, Tonge. Buried 27 March 1866. Clara Thornley. Age 3 mths. Oldham Road, Tonge. Buried 5 May 1875. Frank Thornley. 6 yrs. Oldham Road, Tonge., Buried 29 May 1879. Florence Emily Thornley. Age 2 yrs. Oldham Road, Tonge. Buried 4 June 1880. Fred Thornley. Bachelor. Age 18 yrs. Of Swinton. Buried 21 Dec 1882. The records are on microfilm at Middleton Library, but the library is closing this coming weekend for approx 5 wks. Doreen.
Thank you for this information - it is much appreciated. I live in Dorset so have to travel to access any records. I have been to the Oldham Local Studies place but did not know about records at Middleton Library. I would be keen to hear of any others you find in the same plot although I appreciate the indexing is probably a long job. This William Thornley was my great, great, great grandfather. He was born at Hollinwood, Hopwood or Middleton depending on which census I look at! He married Elizabeth Berry who was born at Tonge, Middleton. Their children were all born at Middleton starting, I believe, with James who was born in 1838. I have not been able to find the marriage of William and Elizabeth as it seems to be before 1837 and was not at St Marys, Prestwich. This is a brick wall for me - have you any idea of other churches that I could try to find their marriage record or baptisms of their children. Hello Margaret, The marriage of William and Elizabeth could have taken place at Oldham St Mary. A few marriages for Middleton people have been found at Bury St Mary. Manchester Cathedral is another option, but these should all be included in the IGI. No Hollinwood marriages prior to 1837. The baptisms of the children could be St Leonards - I haven`t indexed the 1830s yet. They are not at St Michaels Tonge. I`ll keep the grave number in mind as I index further records for the Old Cemetery. Best wishes, Doreen.
