    3. Hi Janet, Found your photo's very interesting. Could the Milkmaids be just a mock up, as this sort of thing was very common for Mayday and bank holidays. They look like mill workers outside a mill!! Could the school be Durnford St. or possibly Elm St. The building looks so Edgar Wood. Has anybody else any ideas as I may be totally wrong. I had a look through my Middleton books lastnight and none of these photo's are in them, although there was one in the Middleton in Retrospect [53] of Tonge A.F.C. The club originated in St. Michael's school and later transferred to a venue behind the "Old Cock Inn". It was registered as a football club in 1887 and from 1890 played at a ground at Tonge Hall. While members of the Manchester League they won the League Cup 5 times and were also league champions on at least one occasion. The club folded in 1923. Hope that gives a bit more input. Margaret. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet C" <janetcee52@hotmail.com> To: <ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 24, 2005 9:28 AM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] More Middleton photos > > I'm really grateful for all the ideas I'm getting about the photos I > posted yesterday on my Blog site:- > http://sharejansphotos.blogspot.com/ > I've just added a few more, including a Middleton school group and a drama > production group, which may be of interest to someone out there! > Regards > Janet C > > _________________________________________________________________ > It's fast, it's easy and it's free. 3. Thanks for your ideas Margaret. The Merry Milkmaids photo is of particular interest to us, as we think that one of the girls dressed up as a man, in top hat,is my husband's grandmother. I'm hoping someone else will be able to positively identify the group. His grandmother, Eliza Ann BENTLEY, certainly worked in a Mill at one point, as we have inherited her collection of postcards, and one says: "Dear Liza, Hope you are getting on alright at the mill. Will be seeing you some time. My mate’s having a bad time since you left. With love from both, May" She also worked at the Jam Works, which we learnt from another postcard: "9 Crag Brow Chadderton Dear Friend, Sorry to hear of your Accident, at Jam Works. But I hear it is not very serious, but I suppose it is bad enough hope you will soon be alright. Yours sincerely J.S." But the stamps (and hence the postmarks) were removed from the cards by an over-zealous young philatelist at some point, so I can't accurately date either - but they must pre-date her marriage in early 1913 as they are addressed to her maiden name. Anyway, thanks again for your input - all suggestions are being kept for future reference! Best wishes Janet Curran >From: "Margaret Fletcher" <moonraker47@tiscali.co.uk> >Reply-To: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com >To: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] More Middleton photos >Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 15:04:33 +0100 > >Hi Janet, >Found your photo's very interesting.
