    3. Hi Folks I am sorry I have lost track of who is looking for James HEYWOOD but if it is of any help I think I have found the one that Doreen has found the birth for on the 1861 census and there is a definite Middleton and Cheshire connection, also there is a sister in law that might be of help in identifying the correct one. 3. Hallo Diane, Sylvia and Joan, I believe I am descended from Betty Woolfenden and James Wilde, who married at Oldham Parish Church on 11 April 1814, but I haven't confirmed it yet. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has links to this family. Diane: one reason for the long gap between Henry and Mary Ann could be the death of Ann, and James's consequent re-marriage several years later. This has happened at least once in my ancestry. Kind regards, Bert Pemberton. ----- Original Message ----- > > From: "Diane Richard" <dianelr@nc.rr.com> > > To: <ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com> > > Sent: Saturday, September 10, 2005 7:57 PM > > Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Wolfenden/Woolfenden ... 1. post-1858 Will ... someone living in Oldham
    2. Diane Richard
    3. Hello, There is a decent chance that James Wolfenden, hatter, who died c. 1890, Oldham left a will. We find in 1891 that his wife, Sarah Ann (Crossley) Wolfenden is living on her own means as a widower, at their family home with a daughter, son-in-law and their family! For someone living in the US, is there an accessible index to wills from this period? If not, where are the indexes located? Thanks much, Diane :-) Diane Richard Raleigh, NC USA dianelr@nc.rr.com

    3. Hi David, Quite a lot of the Rhodes children were baptised at Middleton St Leonards (these have not yet been indexed for the 1830s), so you could look there. I think this is a case though where you must first find the marriages to ascertain the fathers name - there are a couple of James baptised in Middleton around the early 1830s, and this is without even looking at at St Leonards. Both are at St Stephens Chapel, but neither mention being born in Rhodes - in fact one is from Werneth in Cheshire! There will probably be further baps for a James within the same time period at St Leonards. You may do well persevering with the earlier census records (the Middleton/Rhodes ones are surname indexed) and collect the ones with a James Heywood appearing as a son. Not easy, but well worth an extra effort to get the correct families. Best of luck. I know its not so straightforward with the name of Heywood, as there are quite a lot in the area. 3. Hi Norman Thank you for your reply to my post. You have found my problem - I do not know his parents. I have not found his 1st marriage to Elizabeth before c1861 or the 2nd to Jennet (any of 8 spellings) Mary Ann Bell in Hoxton London before c1871. He should have been with his parents in 1841 aged 9 but I have not found an entry in the Middleton area, although they might have moved to London but I am a bit reluctant to start that search after an earlier long and fruitless search of c71 only solved by the arrival of the online index. The other possibility is a baptism but I still have to make a visit to look for one. Can anyone advise where I should look for a Rhodes Baptism. 3. Hello David, Who were the parents of your James HEYWOOD.? I have a James HEYWOOD, (father, William, mother, Ann TAYLOR), who married a Mary Hannah CHEETHAM in St. Mary`s, Prestwich in 1861. He is variously described as a Machine printer on calico, colour printer and commercial traveller etc. His first wife in the 1861 census was 10 years older than him, born Goodwood Sussex and also described as 'Do' ie a machine printer on calico. I have assumed he trained in Rhodes/ Middleton before moving to London but have not found him in the 1841 & 1851 cd's but many sheets are unreadable, or in the transcribed damaged pages. Nor have I found either marriage or a death for his first wife before his second marriage by the time of the 1871 census. He named my grandfather Henry Halliwell (various spellings) Heywood and his sister Florence Seelig Heywood, two interesting second names. > > Any help or advice would be very gratefully received > > David > Fishguard Pembs > > > ==== ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe, > you should send the command "unsubscribe" to ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L-request@rootsweb.com > (if in mail mode) or ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-D-request@rootsweb.com (if in digest mode.) > To switch from one mode to the other, you should unsubscribe from one > and then subscribe to the other. 3. Thank you for the look Sylvia. Yes ... they did NOT seem to show up in Directories much -- even in Hollinwood and Failsworth where two generations of hatters lived and the father was prosperous enough to have a will ... they were listed maybe twice! Appreciate the help! 3. Hi David, Sorry I can offer no help with your query but thought you might like to know that "seelig" is German for 'blessed'. Maybe you have a German among your ancestors? I too have german ancestry (Reneker) but have been unable to find the link so far. My gr.gr.grfr William Reneker Astley poss. had a german mother (?or Grandmother?) but I can find no trace of his parents' marriage or of his baptism (born approx 1810-15 in Lancashire). All the best. Rita. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Heywood" <david@heatherkop.freeserve.co.uk> To: <ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2005 11:23 AM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] James Heywood in Rhodes I wonder if anyone can help with tracing my difficult gt grandfather and his roots. >From the census data, James HEYWOOD was born abt 1832 in Middleton (c1861 >London), Rhodes (Middlesex, sic, in c1871 London) and Rhodes when he was >Lodging in Middleton in c1881 with his second London born wife and their 3 >children still in London. 1. Wolfenden/Woolfenden ... Rochdale & Oldham
    2. Diane Richard
    3. Hello, I am researching the Wolfenden/Woolfenden family . this has been a 10+year brick wall now! ;-) James Wolfenden, hatter, born c. 1795 in Rochdale, married Ann ??? (from Oldham), sometime before 1817 when they have their first child. All children were baptized at St. Mary's, Oldham. The children were William (1817), James (1819), John (1821), Henry (1825), Mary Ann (1836). can't explain the big gap between Henry and Mary Ann. James dies in 1864 and Ann in 1879. So anyone researching WOLFENDEN, WOOLFENDEN in ROCHDALE or OLDHAM . we have seen some reference (a tombstone at St. Chad's in Rochdale) stating: Here resteth the body of Jonathan Woolfenden Hatter who died Oct 6th 1813 in the 47th year of his age. Samuel son of Jonathan Woolfenden died March 28th 1799 aged 9 mths. Also Henry Woolfenden Hatter who died Jany 9th 1813 in the 79th year of his age. Also Henry the son of Joseph and Mary Woolfenden Painter who died Decr 23rd 1836 in his 2nd year. Obviously the name of Woolfenden and the occupation of Hatter is intriguing . though, no reference to a Jonathan in our family that I have found so far! So, don't know if this is related and it's possible! TIA for any connections, research ideas, data . basically, any assistance would be much appreciated!
