For some time now, I have been researching details of my G Grandfather, William GREENHALGH who was born in Oldham in 1843/44. I know his father to be a William also. I have been able to trace a William Greenhalgh, born 8/9/1843 to William & Hannah Greenhalgh in Oldham. Census suggests there is another William born to William & Betty Greenhalgh., of Oldham This is confirmed by the 1851 & 1861 censuses. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate a birth entry for this person, having scrutinised many web sites, e.g. LDS, Ancestry, Lancashire BMD, & Free BMD amongst others. I know that William married Jane SHEPHERD of Royton in the parish church at Prestwich on 26/10/1868. They had several children, John 1872, Mary 1875, Robert 1877, Tom 1879, Unice (Minnie) 1880 & Amy 1882. This William was the Manager of a Cotton or Fustian factory. William died at Congleton in Cheshire in 1927. Any information that you can provide or advice you can give me which might assist in clarifying the birth of William Jnr. No.2 would be appreciated. Regards Keith Jones

Dear all, I discovered just last week that my great great grandfather William Kent was born about 1806 in Middleton Lancashire. This was according to the 1851 census when he was living in Bermondsay. I had no idea previously that my ancestors came from Lancashire so I want to learn more - by distance as i live in Syney, Australia. William's grandson also William immigrated about 1887. any information about Middleton and life in past times will be interesting to me. Judith Lee nee Kent.
Hello, There is an unnamed HILTON boy recorded in the Middleton sub district / Rochdale Registers for 1838. I suggest that you apply for this which is identified as M/1/198, asking that it only be issued if the father is .... and the mother is .... assuming you know who should be the parents. As a matter of fact the Chadderton sub district of Oldham was designated Chadderton and Tonge. The area covered Tonge , Middleton Junction and went as far into Middleton as Lark Hill, and Townley St. I surmise that the Rochdale sub district would be that part of Middleton between the Town Centre and Castleton, which itself was part of the original Borough of Rochdale -----Original Message----- From: MARSHALL HILTON [mailto:MARSHALL_HILTON@msn.com] Sent: 15 January 2006 15:21 To: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Birth date for David Hilton Yes, I am aware of this David Hilton. Hello Julian I've nothing terribly exciting to add... just that Marriot Wilde (junior) is listed as 11m on the 1851 census, meaning he would have been born around 1850. If you don't already have the image, I can send it to you off-list. From Ancestry there's this death:- Name: WILD, Marriott Record Type: Deaths Quarter: March Year: 1850 District: Halifax County: West Riding of Yorkshire West Yorkshire Volume: 22 Page: 123 and there;s a birth recorded in 1899, which may or may not be related to your family:- Wilde, Matthew Marriott 1899 September Births Chesterfield Derbyshire Have you also seen the other Marriot WILD on the 1851 Census, living in Oldham - aged 6, son of Edward & Harriet Wild? Like you say, it's such an unusual first name that you would expect to be able to trace it more easily - but such a varety of spellings, well, Good Luck! Hope someone else can come up with some more concrete answers for you. Best wishes Janet C >From: "Julian Rudd" <julian.rudd@blueyonder.co.uk> >Rather unusual name..wondering if it registers with anyone here >Marriott Wilde (also spelled Mariot, Merriott) believed born c.1816 in >Oldham, Lancashire.
