    3. Good morning All! Listed below is what I have. I would appreciate suggestions on where to go backwards from here. Where can I access the 1841 Census? Is there a mailing address for requesting: Marriage record for John and Betty, Birth records for all, and possibly a Death record for Mary? John PILLING is listed as born in Bury Is that close by Middleton? The census taker has Lanaster, but I am certain he meant Lancashire! 1851 CENSUS England>Lancashire>Middleton>Chadderton My ancestors are John and Betty KENT PILLING John PILLING age 42 born Lancaster Bury occ block printer calico Betty 43 born Lancaster Middleton Edward 15 " " Thomas 12 " " John 10 " " Hannah 8 " " Jane 3 " " Mary 2 " " The entire family except for Mary is found in Pennsylvania, USA by 1860 Census. With deep appreciation for any help. Kind regards, Mary McCanney Finley

    3. Hi Neil If you look on the fhs http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ You will see Samuel Kenyon Married Susannah Coates At Manchester St John I did the search between 1851 - 1863 and this was the only Samuel Kenyon that came up. This site is very useful because they do enter the partners and tells you which church the marriage took place and it is much faster than FreeBMD, but of course they are only covering a County not a Country. It is the same as FreeBMD it is free to view, you will however have to check the coverage not all BMD's have been transcribed yet so a return visit could prove successful. When you do find a match if you want the certificate, if you click on the file number it will take you to a form already filled in with the details all that you have to do is out your details in. 2. Fred H Held
    3. Neil, FreeBMD (which incidentally you have free access to) shows a Samuel KENYON married in the first quarter of 1857 (Mar 1857 Manchester 8d 482). On the same page is a Sarah Ann SMITH. Because of the way the data are recorded you can only tell who is on the page, not who is married to who. The only way to be sure is to purchase the registration certificate. 3. Hi to list, I have been trying to track down the marriage of my gg-uncle Samuel KENYON. Thought he was married in USA but find no record. Samuel was born in Middleton, England about 1834 the son of Joseph KENYON and Mary (BUTTERWORTH) KENYON. At some point between 1856 and 1863 he came to USA. I find a record I believe to be Samuel with his wife Sara A. in the 1870 census of Phil. So, was thinking he may have married in England in the mid to late 1850's? He is shown living with his parents in the 1851 census of Oldham at the age of 17. Samuel does not show up in the 1861 Oldham census record for this family. I wonder if someone might be able to check marriage registers for the record of the marriage of Samuel KENYON. b. 1834 to Joseph and Mary KENYON. Neil Kenyon French Lick,Indiana USA

    3. Hello Margaret, The marriage of William and Elizabeth could have taken place at Oldham St Mary. A few marriages for Middleton people have been found at Bury St Mary. Manchester Cathedral is another option, but these should all be included in the IGI. No Hollinwood marriages prior to 1837. The baptisms of the children could be St Leonards - I haven`t indexed the 1830s yet. They are not at St Michaels Tonge. I`ll keep the grave number in mind as I index further records for the Old Cemetery. Best wishes, Doreen.

    3. Hi My gg grandfather John Hilton with his wife Alice and family are on the 1851 census with the address being Deansgate in the parish and township of Middleton. I have looked at several old maps but can't find anywhere resembling Deansgate. Please can anyone enlighten me as to where it was situated. Also in later censuses Johns son, another John, was living in Clarkson Street. I would also like to find where this is or was if it no longer exists. Regards Mal Campbell W.Australia

    3. Thank you for this information - it is much appreciated. I live in Dorset so have to travel to access any records. I have been to the Oldham Local Studies place but did not know about records at Middleton Library. I would be keen to hear of any others you find in the same plot although I appreciate the indexing is probably a long job. This William Thornley was my great, great, great grandfather. He was born at Hollinwood, Hopwood or Middleton depending on which census I look at! He married Elizabeth Berry who was born at Tonge, Middleton. Their children were all born at Middleton starting, I believe, with James who was born in 1838. I have not been able to find the marriage of William and Elizabeth as it seems to be before 1837 and was not at St Marys, Prestwich. This is a brick wall for me - have you any idea of other churches that I could try to find their marriage record or baptisms of their children. 1. Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Threepits, Middleton
    2. Dear Rosemary, For the first time in 2years on the list a relative has got in touch - wonderful! Lawrence Styles was my paternal grandmother Bertha's brother. She was the oldest of the 7 children and married Fred Stansfield on 1 Feb 1913 at St John's Thornham, near Three Pits. Both families lived at Three Pits then (numbers 2 and 18). Fred's mother, Emma worked at Hopwood Hall. My father, Harry, aged 89, who lives with me, remembers walking to Three Pits from Burton Street in the centre of Middleton where the family moved in, I think, 1916. His older sister Nora, born in 1913, died of meningitis at Three Pits in 1914. I did a recce in Middleton 2 or 3 years ago and the houses at Three Pits have been replaced by a modest terrace of houses parellel to the main road, and set back from it, not on the same alignment shown old maps. They were originally three sides of a square, facing onto open country on the 1910 map. The allotments where my Dad recalls Samuel Styles, (Bertha and Lawrence's father), grew prize geraniums, may be on the site of what is now a nursery. I'd be thrilled to exchange further information if you contact me off list at hathorkath@aol.com All the best Kathy Stansfield

    3. Margaret thank you so much for your reply. I remember visiting my gran (Gladys Styles) there in the 1960s. I remember going to the canal as well, I didnt realise the area was called Slattocks though so thank you for that. Her cottage always seemed so exciting as a child, the funny little stairs up to the bedroom and the outside toilet!. It was always immaculate. My neices have been asking me about them. Does anyone know what was put up in their place - I dread to ask! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This email is confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual to whom it is addressed. 3. Hi Rosemary, My Dad's Aunty lived at Three Pits, Slattocks. Veronica Hall. Dad used to take me visiting her usually when we'd been fishing at the canal. It would have been late 1940's and into the early 1950's as I was only young. I remember her cottage being cold, dank and damp smelling. They should have been preserved, not demolished. 3. Hi Tracey & Tony: Wow! Thanks a lot for the prompt reply with information about the Odd Fellows Arms. Thomas Foxall was my g-g-grandfather. This is great to know a little more about the place. Hopefully I will be able to secure a photo of it to add to my archives. Very much appreciate your writing. On to the next step of finding out more about the Foxalls. My g-grandmother his daughter Sophia married Joseph Williamson. I have them and family living with Thomas on the 1891 Middleton Census but don't have an address yet. Cheers Angie

    3. Hi I have checked the Middleton pub book, and that says that the pub can be traced back to 1870 when it was kept by a brewer called Thomas Foxall. He was still there in 1891 but gone by 1900.
