    2. ________________________________________________________________________ Subject: : Joseph H. PRICE / COLDSTREAM GUARDS Date; 17th.March, 2006 Dear List, I have done much research on the Cheshire, and Lancashire PRICE families. of Wervin, Stoak and Little Stanney, in Cheshire, being the areas where many of the PRICE, family members were born and lived, starting with Edward PRICE, born c1782. Until several of the family members moved to Haslingden, Rawtenstall and Middleton, in Manchester, Lancashire. Joseph H. PRICE, was born in Middleton, in 1860.at Beattie Farm. I have no date as to when he enlisted with the Coldstream Guards. The last information I have of him appears in the 1901 census which list him in a Lodging House, at 9, Front Mill Gate, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, Single and working as a Mason's labourer. I would be very grateful if someone could please, help me with any information as to Joseph's, whereabouts and occupation after 1901. Perhaps, from the Electoral rolls. I have purchased several possible Marriage and Death certificates, and drawn blanks One of the last members of the family was Henry Joseph PRICE, who died in Birkenhead,1905. aged 76. of whom, the above Joseph, was his Nephew. Kind regards, TIA Ted. (In New Zealand)

    3. Hi Maggie, To the best of my knowledge St Luke's Heywood was not registered for marriages until the start of civil registration in July 1837. Most marriages in the Chapelry took place at St Mary's Bury the mother church. Chadwick is certainly a local name. The Lancashire Family History Society have indexed the Bury PC marriages. Do you have an address from the son's baptism? It could help with the parish the family lived in and where the marriage took place. Good luck. 3. Ness, Brilliant! Thank you so much. I enjoyed working through the story of the funeral director and wondering where it was all going to lead until I got to the map. Typical that they should suppress a decent name like Holebottom while leaving something as potentially disgusting as Wrigley Head in place! Thank you for Ralph green too. I wonder whether the playing fields on the other side of Manchester rd represent the last bit left of the green. The locations are important because they make it much more likely that the following sequence is one family rather than two, moving around in a small area. BAP HOL Aug 12th 1821 Benjamin s. of Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Long Lane, wea. BAP HOL Jul 20th 1823 Mary d. of Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Long Lane, wea. BRN Aug 27th BAP HOL Oct 29th 1826 Joseph Ogden s. Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Holebottom, hatter BUR Mar 9th 1828 Joseph Ogden s. Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Holebottom, 18 m. BAP HOL Mar 14th 1830 Sarah d. of Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Failsworth, hatter BAP HOL Apr 7th 1833 Ann d. of Richd. & Betty Ashworth, Hollinwood, hatter Mary is my GG-Grandmother. The remaining puzzle is that she says she's from Newton in the 61-81 Censuses and at her marriage in 1844 that her father was a weaver, whereas on other lines I tend to find the father's latest career development is the one that gets mentioned. 3. Dear Listers, Here are some locations of ancestors found in St Margaret's Hollinwood. They're not Middleton locations, but I hope some one on the list can help identify them. Can anyone identify 'Ralph green', also 'Halfstreet [Ralph green]'? 'Holebottom' ? A Holebottom does show up on the A to Z (and just that - no 'street' following) over in Smallshaw in Ashton under Lyne, which seems a bit far away to still attend St Margaret's Hollinwood from. Was there one closer to the church? One location, 'Long Lane,' I think I have found on the A to Z just off Broadway as it crosses over the M66 into White Gate. It's just managed to avoid being obliterated by the M66. The girl born there in 1823 later in the Censuses says she is from Newton. I suppose it could be considered the very edge of Newton Heath, though it looks to me to be on the boundary between Moston and Chadderton. Does anyone know what the name White gate derives from? A toll bar? John Heywood

    3. Dear Janet, The first 'sighting' i have of the Kents is William who was recorded in the 1851 census as born in 1808 in Middleton. I assume he left there as a young man as his wife was from Staines near London. I can only assume that he had siblings born around the 1800- 1815 period and that his parents who would most likely have been born between 1770-1785 were from Middleton.
