Hi John, Have you seen the baptism at St Leonards in 1785? Or are you looking specifically for a Joseph with a father named John? Bap. St Leonards. 25 Sep 1785. Joseph s/o Thomas Heywood, weaver, and Sarah his w. of Middleton. Doreen.
Hi John, Where is Joseph living in 1851-61? Is he still in Heywood or Middleton? This may be clutching at straws but the publication of the Heywood St Luke's register gives me a Joseph Heywood baptised in exactly one of the years I'm looking for him in - 1784. He is the son of a John Heywood at Taylor-fold. His father's name is the same as he gave his own first son. The trouble is Joseph says he is born in Middleton in both the 51 and 61 censuses. Does anybody know where Taylor fold Heywood was? Was it near Thornham or the Middleton boundary? Could it 'count' as Middleton? All the best to everybody, John
Hi, Another request about Thomas Clarkson, who lived in Rhodes from at least 1824 with wife Sarah Greaves and their 8 sons, then second wife Mary Aughton. In both 1851 and 1861 Thomas gave his birthplace as the Northwich area of Cheshire, leading me to think he wasn't related to the other local Clarksons. However, his second marriage certificate gives his father's details as James Clarkson, a coal dealer, and in 1841 and 1851 there is a James Clarkson, coal dealer, living with his son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Betty Clarkson, in Rhodes/Middleton. Thomas and Peter, and some other Clarksons in Middleton are the right age to be the sons of a James Clarkson who were christened in Blackley in the early 1800s. Could anyone researching this James Clarkson, or any of the other local Clarkson families in the mid 1800s, please get in touch to exchange details. Thanks, Dom O'Malley.
Hi Dom, I wouldn`t assume he is in the same grave just because he is the burial mentioned afterwards. What year did Thomas die? I have 3 named Thomas Clarkson on the burial index up to now. Grave 19-73-3 : I just have Peter and Betty Clarkson buried there up to date (still ongoing). Only about 1 in 10 in the registers have grave numbers. Members of the Middleton Local History Group are shortly starting to record the M.I.s for graveyard 3. I was going to do this last yr but had some health problems and wasn`t able to arrange this. I have given them a short list of grave numbers to help with their recording. The graveyard has recently been cleared of bushes, grass and weeds etc, so this will make their work a little easier, though many of the stones will still be hidden below the surface. Will keep the list posted on their progress. There are over 2,000 graves in this area, so it won`t be a quick job! Doreen.
Hi everybody, Until recently I haven't been able to link an ancestor, Thomas Clarkson, who lived in Rhodes from at least 1824, to the other local Clarksons. However, after collaborating with David Pointon, who lives in Whitefield and who's wife is also a descendant of Thomas Clarkson, I have an excellent clue. David has found the burial record from St. Leonard's of Thomas Clarkson, listed with a Peter Clarkson and Peter's second wife Betty. He then visited the grave, but the gravestone inscription only mentioned Peter Clarkson and both his wives. The burial records show Peter Clarkson buried in grave No 19-75-3. Thomas Clarkson is listed next but there is no grave number. Can anyone who is familiar with the burial records tell us if it is safe to assume this would mean he is in the same grave? Thanks, Dom O'Malley.
From: ed_thomas@wxc.net.nz Subject: Joseph .PRICE / COLDSTREAM GUARDS Date; 21st. .March, 2006 Dear List, Could SKS please, help with any information of the PRICE, families of Wervin, Stoak, and Little Stanney, in Cheshire, where Edward PRICE, was born c1782. Several other family members were also living in Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Middleton, and Bury, in Manchester, Lancashire. where Susannah HUTCHINSON, nee, PRICE, was born in Heywood, c1867 last known living at 21, Irwell Terrace, Warth, Bury, 1919. I wonder if someone would be able to discover for me the whereabouts of a Joseph Henry PRICE, after the 1901 census. Born in ,1860 at Beattie's ? Farm, Middleton. In the 1891 census Joseph, was in the COLDSTREAM GUARDS. In the 1901.census he's living in a Lodging House, at 9, Front Gate Mill, Rawtenstall, Single, age 40 working as a Mason's Labourer. . T I A Ted.
Hello Ted, Not very good news I`m afraid. Its very difficult researching forward from the 1901 census. The electoral registers, if and where available, are indexed only by streets. So really you can only try and find out how long a person stayed at the last known address for. Once they moved - they could have gone anywhere, and its virtually impossible to find them from this source. You could search the BMD indexes to see whether Joseph married late, and whether he had any children. The certificates would give an address to work from. These searches unfortunately take quite a bit of time, but theres not really another option. Also his death cert will have an address, if you could find mention of him in the indexes. There could have been an obit in the local newspapers which, if lucky, could give some info on his life. I`m not sure whether there are trade directories available for Rawtenstall - perhaps someone on the list knows - but in the larger towns, these are indexed in 3 categories, one of which is surnames. Probably not available like this for Rawtenstall. Doreen.
Would anyone visiting the Rochdale library and having a few spare moments, kindly check for me in the Rochdale street directories for the names of people living at Brown House in the 1920s and 1930s. I believe that Brown House consisted of two homes in the 1930s, and was an isolated building on the moors in the Syke area (my childhood memories!). I know that Brownhouse Wham Reservoir still exists. Thanks, Edward (from Wagga Wagga)

Hi Neil, I`ll check the burial records for St Leonards as soon as the library re-opens - another 2-3 wks yet I`m afraid. I still have the 1860s to index for this church. Doreen.
Hi to list, I have been trying to determine if John KENYON, son of Joseph and Mary KENYON, had died before the family came to USA in 1863. I have located a John KENYON who died in the first quarter of 1860 in the district of Oldham. Since many of this family records have been located at St Leonards I wonder if someone may have access to those registers to see if there is a burial record for John KENYON, son of Joseph and Mary KENYON? John would have been about 20 years old if this is him. Any help would be most appreciated with sincere thanks. Thanks, Neil Kenyon French Lick, IN USA
Hi Joan, I can do this and the obits as soon as the library re-opens - sometime in April. (They are having new central heating installed). Mrs A Jackson has kindly identified the following children on a photograph which I posted some time ago to my Blogger website:- Charles WILSON, Philip JOY, CAMPION, Harry WALKER, ROUSE, Mary THOMAS, Ethel FIRTH, Zena TAYLOR, Bertha _?, HOWARTH twins, MILLER, Jack GILBERT, SIMPSON. They children would have been aged about 11 in 1923, so if you think one of them might be part of your family just go and look at the photo! http://sharejansphotos.blogspot.com/ Janet Curran Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire _________________________________________________________________ Are you using the latest version of MSN Messenger?
