Hi Helen, The 1841 census isn`t the easiest to read - and this is the first census of any significance to FH researchers. Earlier ones, where available, don`t give names. Which area do you need looking up? Some areas have been surname indexed, but it would be a bit difficult without an index, depending on the town. Hi Bill, Just arrived home from work. Yes, that is the baptism of Ann RHODES and the only marriage of a John & Betty RHODES that seems to fit. Unfortunately there was no information on the church records of the time to identify the couple further and I have never found any definate record of John`s birth although there is an IGI baptism of a Betty TAYLOR that could fit. Ann married William McAllister at the same Church on 9 January 1826. William and Ann had ten children, three died in infancy. Ann died age 52 on the 28 July 1858 and is buried at St James Church Heywood a few yards from her home. There is no headstone. When I started family history ten years ago I had no idea of any RHODES connection but was aware that my great grandmother was Dinah McALLISTER, who turned out to be Ann`s youngest child. I will try to get the full details of the marriage 15 Feb 1851of William RHODES and Mary BUTTERWORTH to confirm John as his father. By 1851 there "should" be more details on the church records. Don`t suppose anyone on the list is going into Bury Library tomorrow !!!! Where do you fit in to all this Bill? I had a quick look on the 1901 census for the Bannister family but nothing jumped out. Have you found them? Kind regards Sylvia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Rhodes" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, May 30, 2003 1:55 AM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] RHODES 1798 1806 > Dear Sylvia, > > My brother just found the following records in familysearch.org: > > BIRTH/CHRISTENING > ANN RHODES > > Birth 22 Dec 1806 > Christening 13 FEB 1807 Saint Mary, Bury, Lancashire, England > > Father: JOHN RHODES > Mother: BETTY > > > MARRIAGE > JOHN RHODES > BETTY TAYLOR > 05 NOV 1798 Saint Mary, Bury, Lancashire, England > > Kind regards, > Bill Rhodes

Hi Margo, Thanks for the advice-but when I go to the LDS site, I can only see and/or access the 1881 census. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? I'm having a terrible time with that website-but I'm new to all of this. Many thanks, Helen

Dear Sylvia, By the way we have found most of our Rhodes in the 1881 and 1901 census so no need to look for us. We have not found Samuel Rhodes, or Betsy in 1901, or Thomas Rhodes in 1881 (he married Annie Holt) and they emigrated to New York before 1901 I think.....We can look for them though..... RE: Your McAllisters That is interesting. A big family, but I guess most families in that area had "at least" 5 children. To keep the mills full I'm sure. RE: >>>>I will try to get the full details of the marriage 15 Feb 1851of William RHODES and Mary BUTTERWORTH to confirm John as his father<<<<< Thanks. I guess my brother Phil can also dig for William Rhodes Baptismal online (LDS?). RE: >>>>Where do you fit in to all this Bill?<<<<< I will make an attempt at broadening our family tree next week. I don't have time to spell everyone out now. William Rhodes & Mary Butterworth had 5 children. The first was "Patience"; aptly named because William & Mary did not wed until Patience was aged 4. The second oldest was "John Rhodes" who is my great grandfather. Then came Samuel Rhodes (married a Esther?), Betsy Rhodes, and Thomas Rhodes. John Rhodes had 5 children, the second youngest being "Sydney Rhodes" who is my grandfather. Sydney Rhodes and Stella Davidson Williams (of Cumbria) immigrated to the U.S. in 1926 when my father, Peter, was 6. Later Syd & Stella had a daughter, my Aunt Peggy. The soon thereafter moved to California. My father Peter had 4 children (& 3 step children). I, William Sydney Rhodes, am the youngest. We gleaned much information from a recording in 1983 of our cousins, Jane & Mollie Bannister. They were daughters of Betsy Rhodes, and were forever spinsters, quite a legend in Bury and later Blackpool. Jane Bannister lived to be 104 years old (she quit smoking when she was 102, too expensive). Again, hold off on any Bannister search until I can give you 100% of the map. My brother Philip has done most of the recent internet searching. Thanks again Sylvia for hopping through your family tree wiht us. I'll be quite busy until next week. RE: >>>>I had a quick look on the 1901 census for the Bannister family but nothing jumped out. Have you found them?<<<< Oh, ok here are the names from the tree, Oral history.
