Please can anyone help with information about details recorded in the Oldham St Mary`s marriage registers 1813 - 1830? I have references to several EMERSON marriages that could be from my family line but I do not know if the Oldham register for this era gives any information that would help to identify the couples further. ie address, occupation or father`s name. The List is quiet, so it might be a good time for me to put in a suggestion. Do you have a situation where you want to make a comment in your family tree? but feel frustrated because the tree program does not make allowances for this other than to type your comments inside a persons box in the tree. A comment or reminder you might forget because you cannot see it with out opening the box?. Please consider the following idea. Create an empty box by adding a child to the family. Then name the box 'NOTES'. Now as you glance down your tree you can pick up these notes. I had an example were in the 1891 census Gorton Manchester, my SPENCER family is listed with a young chap aged 3 who is listed as a cousin with the surname name Mathews. This might be the son of a sister to the head of the family. I would like to remember this name with out looking through my paper records. I have other examples of notes I would like as a reminder. I hope you might find this useful. Kind regards Mike Morris

Hello All, I understand from earlier correspondence that the 1861 Census for Oldham has been indexed by surname only. Now that the 1861 Census has been released on CD, I am wondering whether this will make it easier to locate a family in the Census. Apparently there is no index for the whole County yet. I have been trying to trace a RATCLIFFE family and the 1861 Census is the only one that will record them all together. I know they moved to Oldham at some stage, and am trying to find out whether they were there in 1861. If anyone has this new CD, and is able and willing to check the name out for me I would be hugely grateful. The names are James and Ellen RATCLIFFE, Henry aged about 7, Ellen aged about 9 months, and another daughter in between those two. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated thank you. Jan in NZ

Hello Tracy, The best newspaper to look at would be the Manchester Evening News - held on microfilm at Manchester Central Library - but not indexed unfortunately. The Middleton Guardian also reported on some events from North Manchester (including around Heaton Park). This has been indexed and the index is held at Middleton Library on a card system. It is currently being computerised, but the staff are only up to the "C`s" at present. It may be worth checking this source - unless a lister remembers the incident. I can look at the index for you, but it may not be until next Monday, on my next visit. If you haven`t heard anything by then - let me know. Hello listers, I have been directed here by members on the Lancashire list in the hope that someone may be able to advise me. I understand this list covers the area of my research better than the more general Lancs list. I am trying to trace the death of my FIL's brother MATTHEW EDWARD DUNNE he was known as TED). Matthew was born in Dublin around 1918 and moved to Manchester sometime during the period directly after WW11. Little is know about him, but what is know is that he lived in a flat in the Heaton Park area, was divorced and lived alone. I don't know if he had any children. We have been told that he was found dead in his flat during the spring of 1977, having been dead for anything up to 3 weeks. Certainly he had not been seen by his neighbours during that time. My problem is that I cannot find his death registered in the GRO indexes from 1976 to 1978. I have checked each year in full. My question is this - is there anyone on this list who lives locally to that area and may remember such a case? Perhaps it was in the newspapers? Could anyone give me any info on the local papers, such as what area/s they covered and where I might contact them? As this case is a little unusual, I am hoping that someone may remember roughly when it was and can point me in the direction of which year to search. Failing that I will have to search them all! Thank you. Tracy Tracy Dunne, Poole, Dorset.
