Hi Doreen, No I have'nt checked the census as yet i have the 1841 Lancs cnesus and would need to ge the time to go and check the indexes at the Genealogy Society. I only got the certificate very recently so had no idea where this family was living in this period of time. Kaaren
Hi Doreen, Thankyou for the information. I thought the Banns were likely to have their parents names but obviously from what you say they don't. Does this differ with different time periods ?. Here in NZ intentions to marry which are like a registration form contain more information. I understand that Banns were a cheaper option in England. Would I get any more information if I were to get the church records for the marriage? I am familiar with searching in Durham and other parts of Lancashire but am very new to Middleton. Thanks Kaaren
Hi Kaaren, Its certainly worth checking the banns books, but from past experience, I haven`t yet found any further info from them. They are usually only small forms in the books. I haven`t yet looked at any for St Leonards though. The marriage certificate that you have, will be an exact copy as in the church records. Have you checked any census records for the family - these are all surname indexed for all years in Middleton. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi, Recently I obtained the marriage certificate for Thomas Shepherd to Mary Howarth who married Sept 5th 1841 at the Parish Church Parish of Middleton with Banns. I would now like to obtain the Banns for their marriage. . I searched Genuki but not knowing the area I found many C of E churches and was unsure which one was the parish church at that time. Does anyone know firstly the name of the church and secondly where I could obtain the Banns from Any help appreciated. Thankyou Kaaren Beverley NZ
Hi, The banns registers for St Leonards Middleton could possibly be held in the archives dept at Manchester Central Library. The church only hold the much later ones for 1943-1960. If found at Manchester, copies cannot be obtained from the original registers. However, these banns books don`t contain much info - usually names, dates of banns, and parishes. They very rarely give an address or any extra info as on the actual marriage certs. The email address for the archives dept is: [email protected] They will be able to tell you if they have them or not (opened Mon-Thursdays). Hi John, Thanks for your interest. I havn't found any connections with Hopwood but it doesn't mean there aren't any. One of our Fitton boys Tom b 1874 did live in Herbers after living at Simister in 1881. I had noticed the 1881 census entry for your Fitton because of the herbers connection. It's hard to say it could be a coincidece, maybe not ? Laura V.

We (my Australian cousins and I) are trying to find out anything we can about Bridget. All we know is she was born in Ireland 1860? and married Thomas Barton before about1890. Any ideas on where to look etc?? Alison
Hi Listers, I'm Laura, new to the list today, I live in Whitefield, Greater Manchester so quite local really, my interests are: GREENWAY Alice b. 1831 and her father Richard of Pilkington. WARBURTON of Unsworth family of Blacksmiths (originally of Bury) PORTER of Salford then Simister FITTON of Middleton then Simister, Stanley b 1827 a draper and his father James a weaver VIZARD anywhere BERESFORD of Whitefield (some in cotton trade) EMERY of Salford and Prestwich ( mostly in engineering) UNSWORTH of Bolton, Tottington then Salford. BEBBINGTON of Salford. I can help with some look ups and local knowledge, wondering if anyone can do census look ups ? That would be fantastic as I'm really stuck with the FITTONS and BERESFORDS who seem to have appeared from nowhere. Laura Vizard.
Does anyone on the list have contact with Jeff Wilde. I would like to get in contact with him as I " think" I have found a connection between our two families. Kaaren Beverley NZ

Children in order Edward, Thomas 17/12/1890, Margaret (Maggie) and Walter I think. Where would you look? I have tried previously every possible spelling corruption of the name I can think of but can't find a single one on 1901 census.I also checked all the houses in Canon St where Thomas was born- no luck. Sorry for the delay in answering, the original bounced back undelivered. Anne

G'day from Tasmania, My gtgtgrandfather, John CHAPMAN(born 1828, Hartlepool, DUR), is said to have died in the Oldham Registration District, Lancs in March 1895, age 66 - see Vol. 8d, Page 570. Could SKS advise where I can check for the existence of a will and assuming his will is found, where I may obtain a copy and at what cost? Many thanks, Barry Chapman Tasmania, Australia
Hi Barry, The Probate indexes are kept at many of the larger libraries and at LDS centres. Not every one left a will, but if found - copies are 5 pounds each. Many of them are available form York Registry, but the indexes show where the wills were proved. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Have you seen all the Overtons on the BMD.I typed in Oldham and a lot of them came up. Thomas was born in the quarter of March 1891 and parents Edward Overton married Winifred Murray in the 2nd Quarter June 1888. There are further births on it and if the family names continue then they are there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard and Anne Francis" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2003 12:09 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] 1901 Census > Hi, > Would anyone out there know why my whole family appears to be missing from 1901 Online Census? Hello List, Could someone please point me in the right direction to find a marriage. THOMAS BUTTERWORTH, born in Middleton to Robert and Mary Butterworth, is on Middleton census of 2 April 1871 listed as 34 years, single, unmarried. I believe he married Elizabeth (Betty) Dawson just after that census date but I cannot find them on the GRO marriage indexes. Their first child was born in New Zealand in January 1872 and Thomas's indication on his childrens birth certificates is that they married in Middleton. Margaret
