Dear Sylvia (& Laura V, other post), Thanks for your responses on MU / MCFC. My grandfather most certainly saw some of the matches of the Bury FC. I saw on a Manchester Online link that Bury FC had some cup, or championship titles in 1900 & 1903. In the 1970's and before he was a Man City fan. Though we are States-side, our family lore is that my grandfather Sydney used to go to Football matches where up to 100,000 were in attendance. Restrooms (W.C.'s) were a real issue between 1900 - 1914 so the women would sew rubber bags into the trousers; Obviously the lads drank some quantities of beer in those days too. It was a chore to make your way through the standing room only crowds. I wonder if that is the origin of the term "getting pissed"? Forever Blue and occassionaly pissed, Bill
Hi Robert, St Michaels Tonge opened in 1839 (baptisms now partially indexed). Did you spot the baps of Amos and Robert there? Before this church opened, the Tonge people used St Leonards or the non-conformist churches for baptisms. The Methodist churches are fully indexed, and none of your family is there. Have you tried around the Chadderton/Oldham area? Hi Bill, I'm in Whitefield, Lancs (between Prestwich and Bury) and there's certainly no waining of football interest here. Our household will be crazy next saturday because I'm a red, so is my son, but the "other half" is a blue. After last season I'm dreading it, if United dont win next Saturday I'll be having a heck of a night out as it's his family do and all his lot are blues. Hi Bill a rather hot subject in Lancashire, like politics and religion. You are quite right, Heywoodites are split between soccer teams Man U and Man City. Pre TV viewing though many supported Bury as it was nearer on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon. Your/our Rhodes gang would probably have been more likely to have attended Bury FC. The local rugby supporters used to follow Rochdale Hornets but again they now go for the big clubs such as St Helens, Wigan and Bradford. The motorway network is so close it is very easy to get to most of the top sporting events. Heywood still has several amateur soccer teams but I think the local rugby team has finishes this season due to lack of support. The cricket club has a good record and goes back a long way, and the ladies Hockey team have achieved some good results over the years. Crown Green Bowling is still a hands on sport in this part of Lancashire, for both men and women of rather more mature years. The local paper has always covered amateur sport. If anyone has sportsman/women in their families there could be a write up lingering there. Hope this helps. Dear all Lancs & Mancs, FOOTBALL QUESTION Most of my family are from Heywood. When I asked my father what Premier League team my grandfather would have been for, he said "Manchester City". What I'm wondering is what the football culture is like today in Heywood and Middleton? Are they split between M.U. and City? Since Heywood is now a part of the Rochdale municipality, would they "monkey towners" be more interested in Rochdale (2nd League) matches? Do some favor Bolton? Has football fanatacism waned in Lancashire? Thanks.... Thanks for the info; can you tell me how to contact Howard Vizard? I don't have a Samuel born in Weymouth in 1881, but it may be a child born to one of the siblings of my gt gt grandmother. Very good question ! All my Vizards came originally from Alveston/Thornbury in Gloucestershire. However, there is a link that I've investigated but just can't explain. The 1881 census has my Vizards from Gloucestershire living in North Meols, Lancashire (they moved about a bit on their way here) but with them is a James Vizard born Upwey, Dorset aged 45 born 1836 unmarried & a Blacksmith. My Vizard head of household was also a blacksmith. I can find no records of James' birth and no obviuos connection like uncle ( I have most of the siblings of my Vizards Father I think), I have contacted a fellow who had Vizards (Samuel Vizard) Weymouth, Dorset in 1881 and he has no idea who James is, neither does Howard Vizard who has a database on Vizards. I would be very interested to hear of any other connections to Vizards in this area. I believe James may have stayed in the North Meols area after 1881, but not proven.
