    1. Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Sorry Helen
    2. Dear Laura, Not at all- I just do thank you for taking the time to help me. Rachel's father's name would have been JAMES, however, not John. James Wolstenholme, and wife, Jane. They had something like 11 children. Rachel, somewhere in the middle, was born April 8, 1820. The Kay side is John. He was born around 1820 (give or take a year). If you have time to have another look, I would certainly appreciate. Many thanks! Helen

    2. Hi Allan, We are probably related somewhere along the line. I too have Birchalls in Newton in Makerfield and Wests from the Blackburn/Chadderton areas. Christopher West died <1857 was a grocer Christopher West son b 1839 Accrigton Manager at gasworks Henry Stanislus West son b 1870 Accrington, millwright I have a marriage of Thomas Roscoe to Isabella Birchall 1824 St Helens, they lived in Newton In Makerfield. Although I realise they are common names in both areas. There are several people on the Warrington and Newton Lists also researching Birchalls in the area and I seem to remember a link from genuki to Lancashire FHS where there are volunteers doing lookups and one in particular for Wests in Blackburn. 3. Greetings from warm and sunny Papamoa in New Zealand. I doubt if there is going to be any connection between our families, but there is always hope. I have the following possibilities: BARLOW: a GGGgrandfather of mine, James Dawson, married Ann Barlow of Bury in Middleton on 10 Feb 1788. I think, though have no proof, that Ann's parents were Richard and Jane Barlow of Whittle. They are buried in the Middleton parish churchyard beside (I think, maybe near) Ann who died aged 23 in 1793, and also Micah Barlow of Little Heaton who died 4 Nov 1761 aged 42. Don't know where he fits in. There are so many Barlows in the area that I have given up trying to sort out the family. PARR: I am particularly interested in Ann and John Parr who were living at Birch in 1798 and around the area (Prestwich, Unsworth, Whittle) earlier, and up to the early 1800s. Then I lose them. They are the parents of my GG grandmother Hannah Parr (born 1798) who married John Wild. Ann and John probably married at Prestwich in 1785 and also had William (1786), Mary (1788 or 89), Thomas (1791), Joseph (1793), James (1796), Betty (1800) and Sally (1804). ISHERWOOD: I have a great aunt who married an Isherwood, but all the information on them relates to Heywood. Is any of this of interest? 1. [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] KAY-WOLSTENHOLME
    2. So many people on this list seem to find others who have CDs, records, or will do look-ups. I have written numerous times asking for help with my family members, and have not had any luck thus far. So, I will try once more! I am looking for two names, basically, KAY and WOLSTENHOLME. Specifically, I am looking for census records of John and Rachel (nee Wolstenholme) Kay, married in St. Leonard's, Middleton, October 11, 1840. Would love to know their address and occupation. They should be listed on the 1841 census...they left for America ca.1845. Also, Rachel's address before marriage (parents were James Wolstenholme and Jane, nee Greenhalgh). I have come to a dead end on John Kay of Middleton-would dearly love to learn his parents' names. Also, how would I go about finding baptisms of their children in nonconformists churches?? My thanks to anyone who can help point me in the right direction, or do a look-up! Helen in Germany

There is a Starting Chair right at the south west corner of Oldham, at Hollinwood, but that is on a map (97.13) that Alan Godfrey hasn't published yet. If you think this might be what you are looking for (it's a group of 4 houses off Hollins Road, quite near the junction with Manchester Road) then contact me off-list I will let you have map extracts of both the 1844-5 OS 6" map and the 1890-91 OS 25" map showing Starting Chair. 3. Whilst family search is great for checking dates for baps and marriages, please don`t forget to use this as intended - as an index only. It rarely shows burials, and some of the baptisms found on the IGI could have been buried a short while later. Middleton isn`t fully covered by the IGI so a check needs to be made on the filmed records either at LDS centres or local libraries. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Hello Elizabeth, Cannot see them at Chapel Street, Oldham in the 1871 census. It may be worth while emailing Oldham LS as they have an index there for all yrs. They should be able to give you the folio and film numbers for BINNS families, then maybe someone on the list will look at the CDs for them. N.B. Haven`t yet come across any Binns in the Middleton Burial indexes. Haven`t been able to get to the libraries for a while, but have made a note of it in case anything should crop up in the next few wks. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Bad news-good news The bad news is that very few LDS (Mormon) churches have Family History Centers. The good news is that most (all over the world) FHCs are listed on the LDS FamilySearch website with locations and hours. In addition, some local genealogy societies (not attached to the LDS church) are also granted the status of FHC, at least to the ability to get microfilms and microfiche. The LDS Family History Library catalog is also online at the LDS FamilySearch website. BTW, only microfilms and microfiche can be rented at your local LDS FHC, not books. 3. Bill Yes it is-I tend the Use the LDS Family History Catalogue cd, only because it is quicker than waiting to get on to the site. Also, I tend to think that beginners gain a lot of support from the lDS centres and input from others researching there. I hope Frank that you are gaining some knowledge from being in our Middleton group- if you want to know something just ask- someone will know!! Dear Janet, You may, or may not already be aware, but most of the LDS info is on the internet. http://www.familysearch.org I only say this because my brother and I did some research and only found this site at the later stages. It provided us with some breakthroughs. 3. Frank A thought- if you wish to restrict your research to the Middleton area initially, why not pop along to Middleton Library where you will find numerous records, Parish Records, Newspaper & Census. Other records can be viewed at Manchester library. No doubt our Doreen will pop up with more advice. You are lucky insomuch that you have had a lot of information passed to you- so it should be easy to check upon it and then work backwards. Let us know how you get on.You may get completely hooked and decide to become a member of the Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society.
