Would sks please be able to inform me if Chapel Street, Oldham was still in existance in1871. I had relatives living at 65 Chapel Street in the 1861 Census and have not been able to find them since. Thanks Elizabeth
Chapel Street was still there in Oldham in 1871 (St Peters district). Film number RG10/4093 folios 174 - 176. The house numbers only seem to go up to 32 though. Hi all, Mellalieu was quite a popular name in the area, first ones arriving in Middleton in the early 1600s and thought to be Huguenots. There is some ongoing research to see whether it was indeed these families that introduced silk weaving into the town (- I must enquire to see how that is progressing). Mellalieu Street was named after a family who built the first houses there (?late 1880s). Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi all, I didn't even know there was a Mellalieu St in Middleton and I'm only round the corner. Please correct me if I'm wrong but Mellalieu doesn't exactly sound like a local name. There has probably been a famous one here abouts who the Street was named after. I wonder if a search engine job might reveal who ? If I remember correctly, The Vicarage is Joan in Mellalieu St. and I seem to think the school Truant officer was named Mellalieu in the late 1930s. (could be wrong about that) Hi all, I didn't even know there was a Mellalieu St in Middleton and I'm only round the corner. Please correct me if I'm wrong but Mellalieu doesn't exactly sound like a local name. There has probably been a famous one here abouts who the Street was named after. I wonder if a search engine job might reveal who ? Actually there are two others in the area, one in Heywood, another in Royton. I did not see any others in my A to Z for Manchester and areas. The one in Middleton runs from Wood street in an east direction, across the main road (Long Street) and continues the other side of Long street past the north side of the park as New Lane. A little bit further and you should see the old church St Leonard's just to the south. Hi Elizabeth, The only entry that came up at all on James BINNS was: Todmorden St.Mary: Baptism 1 apr 1799 s Timothy & Betty Binns Bit too early for yours ?? Sorry, Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Could sks please tell me what county Todmorden would be in, in 1772 - Yorkshire or Lancashire. I am trying to trace a birth or christening of Sarah Ramsbottom in 1772. Thanks Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth, Todmorden is just inside the Yorkshire border with Lancashire - bit confusing - I mean in Yorkshire. I found this: Todmorden parish church (ST Mary) baptism: Sarah d. John & Peggy Ramsbottom, Todmorden. 2 sep 1776. Wonder if she could be yours - there are no earlier baptisms back to 1772 for Sarah. Hope it's of use, Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Helen, Sorry again, the latest records for Middleton I have are 1752. Just a bit too early for your James Wolstenholme. But in future if you get back further I will be happy to do lookups for you. Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Helen, Really sorry not to have responded to you on your Wolstenholmes (I'm the one with the CD). I've been on 6 lists lately and remenbered checking the disk for them before - onlt it was probably in Warrington or something, anyhow no excuses. I have run through John Wolstenholme but found nothing after 1750, which is a bit of a nuiscance as my records probably finish there. Onlt I did find 2 baptisms at Tottington St Ann on 5th nov 1827 (not twins) Mary and Ellen daughters of Kershaw & Rachel Wolstenholme of Four L, Ends, weaver. Probably all a bit too early to be of use though. Sorry you had to wait all this time and I've nothing for you, Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Helen, I am one of the guilty ones! You did ask me to look at the 1841 census for KAY and WOLSTENHOLME plus the baptisms. I haven`t been able to do anything for a month or two, but looking through my notes, I see that I had looked at the census and the families were not found in the Middleton area. There are about a dozen pages on this census that are blank and impossible to read. John Kay (s/o James) wasn`t baptised at St Leonards. Checked 1817-1822. Children of John not baptised at the non-conformist churches in Middleton - these are indexed. Will get back to you off-line. If anyone else is awaiting a reply from me - many apologies. Will be in contact as soon as poss. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
