Hi Ivy, What was the name of your mill? The only one I can see in the "Mills"index is for Townley Mill which was built 1889 (Messrs Kempsey & Co). Although this says it was on Townley Street, I think this one was further back. A lot of these, I just have names and no streets. The maps show Brookside Mill (built 1860) and Lodge Mill. If you let me know the name, I can take another look at the index. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Hi Doreen, I am a little confused by an email that Alan sent to the list, he says that one of his relatives lived at 9 Townley Street Tongue Middleton in 1880. The reason for my confusion is that I used to own the mill that was the Stationery Shop on Townley Street and we used the number 9 as our address. Jeff Wellens once gave me a copy of an old photograph and the mill was on that, but I can't remember the date of it, I am fairly certain that there was gas lighting on the street, I was just wondering if you had come across this picture or if you knew just how old that mill was, I know I should know but I had thought that it was pre 1900. I know there is quite a few numbers missing down Townley Street and also in the 20 years between 1880 and 1900 the property could have been knocked down especially to build both our mill and Taycal mill. It is not desperately important it is just one of those things that starts to niggle in your brain. Ivy Middleton Manchester

Hi Allan, I also have both MELLALIEU and COLLINGE on my family tree among my other Middleton connections. My direct line is VERITY. A jane MELLALIEU born circa 1888 Worsley, Lancashire married James VERITY, my great great grandfathers brother. James, son of the above James, married a Jane COLLINGE in 1868. And an Ellen COLLINGE married, 1895, John James VERITY, son of James. My VERITY`s were Huguenot-in origin and i would be interested in contacting Laura re the Middleton Huguenot research-if that were-possible, hence my e-mail to you. Allan, would you have Laura`s e-mail address.?? My VERITY line in Middleton, were very much into silk weaving, especially the women among them, which might reinforce the Huguenot connection. Norm. Hi Norm, Laura here on the list but it's not me who knows about the Hugenot / Silkweaving research, I think it's Doreen - I hope it is anyhow or we'll all be even more confused. I'm not very useful really, unless you want a lookup for Middleton pre 1750 which you are welcome to, Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Alan, Sorry I couldn't be more specific about the Mellalieu's you were after. Most of what I have for Middleton is pre 1750 unfortunately. Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
G'day all, Noticed Allan's posting re HILTON but not those of "Robert & Jeff". I have Anne Hilton born about 1820 who married William HOLMES, with daughter Elizabeth, born 6 May 1844, Marshes Buildings, Side o' Moor, Oldham. Elizabeth married John Newton GARSIDE on 8 Jul 1865 at Ashton under Lyne. Any apparent or possible connections? Barry Chapman, in sunny Tasmania, home of Ricky Ponting and the future Crown Princess of Denmark, Mary Donaldson.
Hi Doreen, Warmest thanks for all your past helpful emails, I will be most interested to hear about the Huguenot research in Middleton, and have often wondered if the COLLINGE name might also be from that period. Hi All I know there are many HILTON families in the Middleton area but is there anyone researching the family of Hannah HILTON born c1774. She married Robert EMERSON on the 22 August 1892 at St Mary`s Prestwich. They had about eleven children. At the time the younger ones were born the family was living in the Langley Lane and Hopwood areas. Hannah was buried on the 22 August 1829 at St Leonard`s Middleton. Robert and Hannah EMERSON are my ggg grandparents. Regards. The Research section is on the 1st floor- so you may need assistance with this- why not phone before you go- 1 To Ascertain availability of Film Reader and book 2 To ask what facilities there are for Disabled/Partially Disabled. I think you would get a lot of pleasure from looking at the films yourself and checking the info received from third parties.
