Oh, help..... I am looking for any information on my paternal grandfather, John Whalley. Here is all I have: Marriage 22 October 1907 St James` Heywood. John WHALLEY age 24, bachelor, 112 Broad St Pendleton. father John Whalley The occupations of the two John Whalley`s was difficult to read possibly, (house) agent, and father (gen)tleman. to Mary NUTTALL age 26, spinster, 30 Bury St Heywood. father Samuel (deceased) an overlooker. witnesses Thomas WHALLEY and Alice Nuttall. If anyone can find earlier records that relate to him I would be most appreciative. Robert Whalley
Hi Robert, You could try the 1901 census http://www.census.pro.gov.uk This allows you to search for free, maybe you can tally your names up against each other and with location to find your families, alternatively an address search for "112 Broad" "Pendleton" reveals the Whalleys address but you have to pay to view the images £5.00 per session and about .50p per document viewed (I always save my lookups toghther before opening an account session), hopefully they would be there in 1901 also. Good luck, Laura V ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Neil, Both the 1841 and 1851 census are surname indexed for Middleton and Tonge. No TOMLINSONs on the 1841 for Tonge, Middleton, Alkrington or Chadderton areas. 1851 - 2 mentions, but haven`t got this census at home: HO107/2242. Folios 21 and 127. Both these refs would come under Chadderton if it makes it any easier for SKS to do a look-up for you. Best wishes, Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi to list, Wonder if SKS would be willing to check the following 1851 census record in the Chadderton are for Ann TOMLISON: Record number: HO107/2242. Folios 21 and 127 Ann would be 22 or 23 years old possibly living with her mother or alone. Any help most appreciated. Thanks in advance, Neil Kenyon French Lick, Indiana USA
Hi to list, I would be most appreciative if someone might be able to check the 1841 and 1851 census for Ann TOMLINSON. She was the wife of my gggrandfather Thomas KENYON. They married in 1852 at Prestwich. The marriage certificate did not yield her parents name so she may have been Illegitimate. I hoped I might find her through the census living in the area of Lark Hill Tong which is given as her place of residence on the marriage cert. In the 1851 census Ann would be 22 or 23 yrs old since she is shown as 24 on the marriage cert. She would be 12 or 13 in the 1841 census. I sure like to get a handle on her parent/s - any help would be greatly appreciated. Neil Kenyon French Lick, Indiana USA
I have a "lost soul" in my ancestry named William DONNELLY (many different spellings!) who was lodging unmarried aged 30, born Liverpool, on the 1891 at Mount Pleasant Rd Rhodes, Middleton. He is again aged 30 (!) on the 1901 at Croft Cottages, Rhodes, but this time married and with 4 daughters. I cannot find the marriage or any birth registrations for the 4 daughters all born between 1893-1900 according to ages given on the 1901 census ages. His wife, Jessie was born Cheetham Hill ... all children are down on census as born in Rhodes. Has anyone any knowledge of what church I could look for baptism registers for the births of the children. Also the marriage between 1891-1894. The said William Donnelly had a poor beginning in life. In the workhouse in Liverpool as a youngster and discharged to work on a farm in Shevington, Wigan on the 1871 and 1881 census. Was born RC, but may have changed to Primitive Methodist. Any ideas would be very welcome, also any info on Mount Pleasant and Croft Cottages locations/history. Hi George(Georgina?) I read the Whitehead in your list and hope we can connect. I have: James Whitehead born abt 1824 married to Martha They had 2 children, Harriet born abt 1852 and Lincoln born abt 1866. Harriet married William Booth born about 1849. The marriage was in Coldhurst nov 17, 1870. They had 5 children among them my grandmother Sarah Alice. The family came to Canada from Oldham about 1882. I hope we have a connection - there are so many BOOTHs that I have trouble isolating mine. Hoping to hear George Whitehead Warren in Ontario, Canada (and it is COLD here right now) -----Original Message----- From: Georgina Sales [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: January 10, 2004 11:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Re: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-D Digest V04 #8 my surnames- Smith Wroe Lee Taylor Lees Randles Chadwick Grundy Whitehead Hammond Holden Howarth All Oldham area George --------------------------------- Yahoo! Hi George, I saw your note including interests in Howarths. This is information on my Howarths in that area. I have some more info on others, sent from kind people on the Lancslist. If you have any connection to the below or would like to give some names and dates of people you're looking for, I will check my notes. My Howarths: Jane Howarth married my gggrandfather Wright Hamilton in Oldham, Lancashire, June 12, 1829. Wright was born in Unsworth on 20 Aug., 1809. My ggrandfather John Hamilton had correspondence in the US after he emigrated from a cousins Joseph and James Howarth. There is an 1885 letter from Joseph, at the address of 59 Eton Hill Rd., in Radcliffe. There is an address for James at 35 Lily Hill St., Whitefield. Jane must have had a brother whose grandchildren were James and Joseph (my conclusion) unless her brother was significantly younger than she and had sons James and Joseph. In the 1881 census on family search et of Howarths lived near my ggrandfather and gggrandmother (Sarah Hamilton and John Hamilton, whose husband/father respectively, Robert Hamilton was the son of Wright Hamilton and Jane Howarth. It is possible that the below Joseph Howarth is John Hamilton's cousin... they all often lived close to one another. Hi All, Thankyou to Steve and Doreen for the info on Manchester Library. It was just the way I read it on the Library website "that copying from the parish registers is not allowed" but copies can be purchased afterwards using the order form downloadable from there. I thought it was strange, as I've been to Bolton and Bury libraries and found no such alike. Thanks again, Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/
Hi Allan, I may just have found a photo of the old building on Townley Street, on the corner of Sharp Street. This pre-dates the single storey building that was built later. Sorry, but I seem to have deleted the earlier messages, but if you let me have your email address, I will contact you off-list. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hi Laura, Once you have found your correct film at Manchester Central Library, you can sit there as long as you like, writing out extracts from the registers. If you do wish to take photocopies of anything, these can be obtained for 40 pence (self service). Take a look at the Central Library web site before you go, to make sure the registers you need are on film, and not in the archives dept (for which you will have to book a seat). P.S. Don`t forget to lock up your belongings in the lockers provided. Doreen. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Laura, What a load of old "Tosh". Don't pay anything! Keep your money for a Cup of Tea and a sandwich, use your pencil! Steve
Hi Listers, Can anybody who has been to Manchester Central Library before answer this for me: Is it right that when you find a baptism say (in the parish records) that you cannot just note down the details with your pencil but have to order a copy of that particular thing for 50p? It's just that I have loads of lookups to do and am thinking to take enough money. Laura V. ----------------------------------------- Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/

William KENYON. b.abt.1763 in Middleton to JOHN and Sarah KENYON. m. Aug.26, 1799 to Ann HILTON at St. Leonards Parish in Middleton. I would like to hear from anyone who may have connections with these KENYONS from the district of OLdham in Middleton, England Thanks in advance for any help, Neil Kenyon French Lick, IN USA
Hi Ivy, Thanks for going to take a look at the present building. I will have a look for any available early photos when next at the library. I know that they have quite a lot for that area, but mostly later dates than req. Been looking at my maps again, and find that the building is 48 Townley St. Difficult to find info on the smaller dwellings. A lot of the old deeds (if the property was indeed registered) are now being thrown out. There are some leaflets at the library on tracing the history of houses, and Lancashire Record Office hold some documents for this area. Hope your cold has improved. Hi David Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I think that you are probably right about that and it looks as though Doreen has dug up some proof to that effect as well. I don't know whether you are aware of the situation in Middleton at the moment but the council has approved that the Civic Centre and the Sports Centre and Swimming Pool are all to be knocked down and a Tesco Supermarket built in their place, the replacement Civic buildings are to be rebuilt on Townley Street and of course there is a lot of demolision work going on around there so it is a case of being quick if we are to look at these buildings. Sorry for the delay in aknowledging your input it has been noted and all of these suggestions are worth looking at. Happy New Year Ivy Middleton Manchester
