Hi Ivy and John, Thanks to Ivy for correcting my typing mistake ! And sorry to John for getting it wrong. As Ivy said http//:www.cwgc.org , Laura V.
If you do happen to have a minute I would be grateful if you have the 1871 census for Manchester and could see who was living at 10 TEIGNMOUTH STREET, in the Ecclesiastical District of St Georges, municipal Ward of St Michaels in Manchester. The family that I am interested in and were there in 1861 are William Humfries (this spelling is not easy to read on the 1861 census and could just as easy be Humfriles) plus his age is not easy to read but I think it was 45 in 1861 and he was a Brick Maker born in Chester, Cheshire. Hannah Humfries, wife, age 46, Nurse, born Denbigh, Denbighshire. Margaret Humfries age 19, cotton weaver, born Denbigh, Denbighshire. Ann Humfries, age 10, born Ardwick, Lancashire and Frederick Humfires, age 6, born Ardwick, Lancashire. (These are all the 1861 details) Thanks very much Sandy and John Devlin ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edward Reid-Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 07, 2004 7:34 AM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] census look-ups > Thanks to those who responded to my enquiry about Lancashire census name > indexes. > > To help colleagues I'm happy to look up the odd address in the Lancashire > censuses on CD-ROMs for townships where the street index exists. Doreen Thanks for your email. I have printed out the legible pages that I have from the 1841 census CD for Middleton containing the name Hilton and I am collating it, so far I have 139 INDIVIDUAL Hiltons and I am nowhere near finished! Unfortunately none of them, as yet, that I can connect to our Hiltons. In 1858 Robert, occupation also Dyer, married Ann Woodcock, both living at 10 TEIGNMOUTH STREET, which is in the St Georges area of Manchester. On the 1861 census they are still living at the same address with what I presume are Anns mother and her stepfather, 2 children of their own and Anns sister and a step brother and sister. From then on I have them on various birth certificates of their other children and the 1871 and 1881 census all around the Hulme and Cheetham districts. Ann died in 1880, in 1881 they lived at Lorn Street, Hulme. Robert remarried in 1884 in Broughton and by 1885 the whole family had moved to Leek in Staffordshire and we have a complete history of them from then on. I do not have a marriage record for John and Elizabeth Hilton, the earliest record I have is the baptism of Robert in 1835 at St Leonards Church, Middleton. Hi John, Re: 1841 census for Middleton. There are about 10 pages on the film for the Middleton area that are illegible. I may be mistaken, but think this is the Bowlee area and part of Rhodes. (The whole of the 1841 was recorded in pencil, which had unfortunately faded even before filming). The CD version seems to be the same, but also may not contain the whole of the Tonge area. There appears to be some pages missing, but the main Middleton pages are not too bad. Have you used the surname index at all? (available from Lancs FH & HS). Do you know which area your Hiltons are from, as you say you are also searching Manchester, which is a huge place. Do census records from 1861 onwards give any specific area? I have looked for a Robert Hilton recently in Middleton (1841) and not found him - perhaps for someone on this list? (Cannot locate my notes). He was most likely to have been on the illegible pages. The 1834/5 Middleton Trade Directory doesn`t show a John Hilton, dyer. (have this at home plus some other yrs). Do you have the marriage record for John and Elizabeth? P.S. The 1851 census has around 90 different Hilton families in Middleton!! Re Heywoods in Middleton I have an Elizabeth Heywood who married William Ramsden of Tonge Middleton at St Mary Prestwich on 07th April 1828. No further details sorry! Robert -----Original Message----- From: John Heywood [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 02 March 2004 12:45 To: [email protected] Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Heywoods in Middleton Is there anybody out there who has done any work on sorting out the various Heywood lines in Middleton? My line gets stuck with Joseph Heywood, who died on June 26th 1867 and is buried in Middleton Cemetery, in the section beyond the churchyard aged 83. He was therefore born in 1783/4. Joseph married Alice Taylor from Thornham, who was the daughter of John Taylor and Susannah Fallows who are buried in the lower churchyard. Joseph and Alice had 9 children. Their eldest son(if a possible twin John died in infancy) Thomas had a son Joseph, that we know emigrated to America and ended up in Attleborough, Massachusetts. It's possible the Attleboro' Heywoods have family papers that might take the line further back. I've discovered on other lines that family papers, if they exist, always make a huge difference by producing evidence you would never have arrived at any other way. Good morning All! Does anyone know anything, or ever run across anything, of the FISHER family of Chorlton cum Medlock and/or Ashton under Lyne? I've been trying to get over this wall for about twenty years... Now trying the "shotgun" approach. On Great-grandfather's enlistment papers he gives his age as 17 and his birthplace as "Ousden" or "Housden", Suffolk. I wish I could have known the old fellow. He had a diabolical sense of humour. Every time the census-taker came around, he gave them different information! I can see him chuckling to himself as the worker walked away, completely unsuspecting! He later gave his birthplace as Newmarket, Camb.! He also later changed the place and date of his marriage. I know this because I've got a copy of their marriage certificate. Anything to confuse the census taker! In those days they were actively hostile towards the census-takers, (Not like us today!). In the 1881 census they're shown as living at: 8 Union Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester. (RG11/3923) John Fisher H M 42 Riding Master Suffolk Newmarket Ann Fisher W M 32 Ashton Under Lyne Maiden name OWEN John William S 9 Fethard Cty Tipperary Ireland Elizabeth Ann D 7 Newbridge Cty Galway Ireland Maud Mary D 3 Edinburgh Scotland Kate D 12 months Edinburgh Scotland My Great-aunt Flossie, whom I loved dearly, was born around 1882 in Chorlton. To explain the widely spread out birthplaces, John was a sergeant in the 6th Inniskillen Dragoons and moved to these various places as his regiment was moved. have a wonderful painting of the Inniskillen Dragoons in their full dress, "Moving the families and Invalids to the new station"., with the families and invalids riding in horse-drawn covered wagons. Kate was my grandmother. She and her sister Flossie emmigrated to Canada after the 1st World War. They were both shattered by the death of their brother John and wanted to get away from the wars of Europe. John William was my Great Uncle and I was named after him. He was killed in the Battle of the Somme, 87 years ago last month. I've never been able to find a record of his marriage, but he was 45 years old when he was killed so the odds are that he would have been married and had a family. I've never been able to find any record of their sister's marriages so I've no idea of even what names to look for. Grandmother Kate, (Kitty), married a Mr. Wrightson in 1911. He didn't move to Canada with the sisters. (There must be a story there!) My Father, Kate's son, was born in 1900 when she was still single, employed as a "domestic servant" in a private home. (There must be a story there!!!) (Those Victorians were a scandalous bunch, in a quiet sort of way.) I've probably got dozens of cousins running around the Manchester area... But I can't find them. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks for reading all this. John Fisher
We are researching our HILTON family history. We are doing well from 1861 onwards but are stuck going further back. We have a baptism on June 14, 1835 at ST LEONARDS CHURCH, MIDDLETON for ROBERT HILTON, father JOHN HILTON, DYER, mother ELIZABETH HILTON. We have bought the 1841 census on CD from Stepping Stones and have looked through as much as is legible for Middleton but we cannot find them. We are now trying to look through the rest of the Manchester areas but unfortunately a lot of the pages are illegible also. If anyone has any ideas or can help in anyway we would be most grateful. Yes, this is the one. Its on Union Street (in the old post office building). If you do buy the 1871 census CDs, then Oldham LSU can give you the refs for the surname required (so long as there are not too many of that particular name!). Doreen in Middleton. > Doreen, I was interested in your comments. Now that I'm certain the majority of my research will centre on Oldham and surrounds, I need to start investing in census cds. ?
