    3. Hello John, Yes, spring 2005 is when I will be ready for the graveyard search. Have to finish indexing the burials from the PRs first. Should be finished before then - but winter is not a good time to wander around the graveyard! If you could manage to come over and help - that would be great. Thanks a lot. 3. Dear Doreen, As well as Heywoods, I am connected to Taylors twice in Middleton. Both my G-G-GF and G-G-G-F married Taylor women, and the parents of both of these women James Taylor/Ellen Smith & John Taylor/Susannah Fallows are in Graveyard No 2. G-G-F William & Mary and G-G-G GF Joseph & Alice are in Graveyard No 3 and G-GF William & Emma are in the extension around No 3. I was interested in what you had to say about the graveyard. It strikes me as being a special place compared to many others in the Manchester area, because all the graves are still visible, and together they give you a pretty complete portrait of a nineteenth century society. To all of you who live far away, the graveyard stretches out along a low ridge beside the church with broad views looking over the town and across to the main Pennine chain. In the summer, the graveyard is full of wild lupins. I read somewhere that Samuel Bamford was the first person to deliberately cultivate flowers on a grave (his daughter Ann's), and sometimes wonder if the lupins at Middleton descend from that. I got quite a lot of pleasure out of cracking the code of the grave numbering system. Once you've figured it out, it works. Regarding volunteering, I only live in Lancaster, and would be happy to come over. Do you mean Spring next year rather than this Spring? I have occasional thoughts about having my G-GF's gravestone restored. The cross has been knocked off the pedestal, but is still there. Then I think it would be a waste of money. Having it restored would just be tempting people to knock it off again. 3. True - there are numerous Heywood families in and around Middleton. Haven`t counted them yet, but quite a lot on each census and in the marriage index. The name which occurs the most often locally is TAYLOR. N.B. The Middleton burial index (for the National Burials Index) is progressing slowly but surely. As there isn`t a plan for grave yard number 3, the burials with grave numbers are being entered onto a spreadsheet. It won`t be complete as only about 1 in 10 have these grave numbers entered. 1. Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Heywoods in Middleton
    2. John Heywood
    3. Dear Robert, Thanks for your Elizabeth, but I can't make a connection to her. Do you know who Elizabeth's parents were? The earliest set of Heywood siblings I can relate to are the Children of Joseph & Alice Baptized in John and Thomas 1809 William 1810 Sarah 1812 Joseph 1815 Mary 1816 James 1818 Robert 1821 Joseph 1822 John and Thomas are baptised in different months. But although the change of location (see below) suggests there might be more than one family mixed up here, we have other evidence tying in both John (living with his parents as a widower in the 1851 Census) and Thomas (letter from a grandson in America) to the family. The family itself is said to have come from 'top o' town' ie the 'club house' area close to the church. In 1841/51/61 they're in Fielding St or nearby. Someone has recently mentioned the 90 or so Hilton families. Has anyone counted how many separate Heywood families there seem to be? I had fun some years ago scraping moss off the stones in the utterly wonderful Middleton Cemetery and coming up with around 20 separate Heywood stones. They appeared to have made a mistake with our Joseph & Alice's dates and recut the stone clumsily as a result. Here comes the detail! John bap: 2.04.1809 son of Joseph H. Weaver & Alice his wife of Middleton Thomas bap: 17.09.1809 son of Joseph H Weaver & Alice his wife of Little Heaton William bap: 7.12.1810 son of Joseph Heywood Weaver & Alice his wife of M. Sarah bap: 18.10.1812 daughter of J H Weaver & A of Little Heaton (crossed out and 'Middleton' inserted above. Even the registrar seems to have got confused! Joseph bap 24.5.1815 son of J.H. Weaver & A his wife of M Mary bap 21.4.1816 son of J H W & A of M James bap 9.8.1818 son of J H W & A of M Robert bap 11.3.1821 son of J H W & A of M Joseph bap 5.9.1822 son of J H W & A of M The story behind the mix-up on the gravestone, which is a nice example of being able to get a puzzle sorted out. 'Alice's death certificate and entry in the Burial records make it clear that this is the grave of the Fielding Street couple. This Joseph dies on June 26th 1867 aged 83, well after her, which fits with Alice not being designated 'widow' on her death certificate. But the name ALICE is curiously recut at a lower level as if the carver had made a spelling mistake and had to re-do his work. Her dates and age are also not quite right. The Fielding St Alice dies aged 67 on Feb 11th 1853. The stone has ALSO ALICE HEYWOOD his Wife, who died January 27TH 1853 AGED 68 YEARS. Re-checking the burial records provided an explanation. A few days before Alice's entry is the following 'Anne, wife of Joseph Heywood, Middleton, Jan 31, 68 years.' with the presumed date of death, Jan 27, in the margin. Underneath, someone has started to write the same grave number as Alice's, but crossed it out before completing it - 18-15. - and replaced it with 23-30-3. (And exactly in that position, there is a grave to a Joseph and Anne Heywood, with Anne dying on January 27th, aged 68.) If Joseph and Alice's stone was only cut when Joseph died, fourteen years after Alice, perhaps the stonemason was simply told that the wife had died in 1853 and been left to check out the details with the churchwardens, who stopped at the first entry they came to. When the mistake was realised, the crucial thing must have been to get the name right - Alice doesn't take up much more space than Anne - but the date and the age were near enough to let them stand. To have had it all corrected would have made an even greater mess of the stone.' 2. Good morning Laura! No problem at this end. When I got the compensation company on-screen I thought that there might be a typo. However... Thanks again, because I'm still busy with the other addresses! It's people like you that save the rest of us from dying from sheer frustration...And then I slap my forhead and say, "Why didn't I think of that!" Cheers and gratitude, Ginger Fisher

    1. [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Hilton and Wolstenholme

    3. Hi All, Recently been through lots of parish records from prestwich st. mary and found (because I'm looking for Fitton which looks very much like Hilton in the original parish records) that there really are lots of Hiltons. Also Wolstenholme was a very common name aswell - but there were not as I can remamber many other similar names to that exept Wolstencroft. Hope this helps, Laura V.
