    1. Re: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Parish Registers BETTY HAWORTH 1806/1807
    2. Hello Doreen, Thank you very much for your offer. The only other information that I have on Betty is that she married a WILLIAM RATCLIFFE 16th November 1835 at St. Mary, Bury. This couple had two children before they were married : Thomas RATCLIFFE/HAWORTH b. 4th March, 1827. Christened 1st July 1827. st Mary, Bury. Sarah RATCLIFFE/HAWORTH b. 5th Feb, 1833. Christened 15th Feb 1833. St Mary, Bury. In my notes I have scribbled down a possible JOHN HAWORTH and BETTY CLEGG as Betty's parents, but I did not put the source of this information. It could possibly have come off the IGI. I really must concentrate more in the future :-(( I do appreciate your offer, but please don't go too much out of your way. Kind Regards Helen

    3. Hi Helen, If no-one has has yet replied to your look-up request - I can possibly do this later in the week. The filmed baptism register for the early 1800s is in a bad way. Most of the entries on the bottom part of the pages are illegible. The original register is in archives at Manchester, and I have to check another baptism for around the same dates, so can do two at the same time. 3. Hi Doreen, You are wonderful!! Thank you so much. I have not yet found them in 1851 but do have them in 1861 when they were in Ardwick, Manchester. This (1841) gives me another child that I didn't know about, and a better guess as to when the parents might have married. Elizabeth definitely states that she was born in Middleton on all documents, so I think they would still have been there. Can I be really awful :) and ask if you could possibly check 1840 for me please? If it's not possible I will understand of course. 3. Hi Doreen, I really appreciate this reply, any help is always appreciated. Unfortunately I can't narrow her birth to just one year, only an either/or, which is 1840/41. According to all the records I have for her it could be either. Thank you for your kind offer though. I am fascinated that you say it wasn't usual for Middleton people to be baptised in Manchester, as I had a reply saying just the opposite!! Elizabeth Wilson. ?6 mths or 4 mths (hard to read). All born in county. This family is not to be found in Rhodes or Middleton areas in the 1851 census. 2. Hi again, Tony in Manchester- You have helped me immensely! I have been looking for these people for three years! Now, at last, I know that John was from Oldham, and can continue my search there. The site you gave me was of further help, and I learned much valuable information about my family there. I can't thank you enough! (By the way, do you have access to the 1841 census for Oldham? I would like to learn the address of my John and Rachel W. Kay. Also, something about John's father, James, and his wife Hannah. I'm not sure where to go from here...If you have any suggestions, I would be grateful.) Thank you again, Helen in Germany

    2. Helen in Germany There is a James Henry Kay chr Oldham, Lancashire 12th Oct 1842, son of John Kay and Rachael Wolstenholme/Woolstenhulme and a Samuel Kay chr Oldham 28th Feb 1846, born to the same John Kay and Rachael Wolstenholme. Oldham is circa 3,6 miles from Middleton. Try the same names in the IGI - _http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp) Tony in Manchester ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi Tony in Manchester, Would you be able to look up any KAY christenings in Manchester, 1841, for a son, born to John Kay and Rachel (Wolstenholme)? They were married at St. Leonard's in Middleton, had three children before leaving the country, but I cannot find any christening records for their children. You may have offered the explanation for that-perhaps they were christened in Manchester... Many thanks in advance for your help. Helen in Germany

    3. Hi Tony, No, I didn't realise there were two Middletons, but it would have been the one near Manchester that I am after. All the names in this particular branch of my husband's tree come from in and around Manchester. I have also come across the entry you mention, and the reason why I asked about Middleton is that that is where she puts as her birthplace on the censuses (1861/71), and also on the birth certificates of her children born in Queensland (yes, Aussie certificates have wonderful information on them!). Therefore I thought I should check and see if she had been baptised there as well as born there, before claiming the Manchester Cathedral entry. I don't know her mother's maiden name (birth place Manchester on 1861) or where her parents were married. Her father gives his birthplace as Bolton le Moors in 1861 and Garstang in 1871. As there is about 26 miles between the two places, I have no idea which is right! And yes, I do have the right John Wilson on both censuses! On her last child's birth certificate dated 20th May 1882 she gives her age as 41, which would mean she would have had to have been born in 1840. I do realise that stated ages weren't always accurate, so the 1841 remains a possibility. The only thing that makes me a bit doubtful is the fact that her brother and sisters are not listed on family search. Anyway, a mystery that I shall keep trying to sort out. Thanks for the help, much appreciated, Anne - Melbourne ----- Original Message ----- From: <AndersonLostock7@aol.com> To: <ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2005 5:50 PM Subject: [ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L] Re: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-D Digest V05 #118 > > > > > Hello Anne in Aussie. 3. Hi Anne, Have you got the family on the 1841 and 51 census records at all? If Elizabeth shows up on the 41 census, it would give a better idea of when she was born. It wasn`t normal for Middleton people to be baptised at Manchester Cathedral. The baptism registers for St Leonards Middleton are quite large, but if you can narrow the date to the approx year (instead of two yrs), I may be able to look this up for you. Baptisms are not yet indexed for the 1840s for St Leonards, though the Methodist churches and St Michaels Tonge have been done (Elizabeth not there). 2. Hello Anne in Aussie. Melbourne Are you aware that there are two towns with the name Middleton in Lancashire? One about four miles from the town of Lancaster in the north and the other about six miles from Manchester in the south. If however it is the Middleton near Manchester you are considering, there is an Elizabeth Wilson chr at Manchester Cathedral 30th May 1841, dau of John Wilson and Mary. The reason for suggesting this particular christening is that Manchester Cathedral was considerably cheaper than the surrounding areas. Many locals therefore, would rather travel to Manchester than pay the higher rates of their local churches/chapels etc. Hope this is of some use to you Tony in Manchester, England ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ X-Message: #1 Date: Sat, 16 Jul 2005 16:38:31 +1000 From: "Anne or Gordon Major" <gamajor@ozemail.com.au> To: ENG-LAN-MIDDLETON-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <025d01c589d0$fbdaf1c0$0301010a@majorhome> Subject: WILSON Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Everyone, My name is Anne and I'm here in Australia.
