Hi Bob There are definitely two marriages of Thomas Calland at St Mary, Deane. They are, as you say, to Elizabeth Seddon on 7 Oct 1731 and to Alice Mitchel (sic) of Bolton on 5 Nov 1740. The second one does not say that either was a widow(er). There could, of course, be more than one Thomas Calland. There is no baptism for Thomas Calland at Deane (up to 1750) although there are several other Calland baptisms which I list: Early entries in Latin: Alicia fa. Johannis Calland de Heaton 13 Mar 1714 Rachel fa. Johanis Calland de Halliwell 27 Mar 1724 Johes f. Thomae Calland de Rumworth 02 Apr 1732 Later entries in English: Alice d. of Thos Calland of Heaton 29 Sep 1737 Jane d. of John Calland of Farnworth 24 Nov 1737 Betty d. of Thomas Calland of Halliwell 24 Apr 1740 Betty d. of Thomas Calland, Halliwell 04 Jul 1742 (presumably the first one died but I don't have the burials) All these are from the LPRS transcript. Hope they help. The most likely birth/Christening, for Thomas, that I can see on the IGI is one in 1715. However this does not show any church or father but it states that this Thomas married Alice Mitchell in 1740. As these details have been submitted to the IGI are they wrong? or did Thomas marry twice?. Elizabeth had her last child in 1740, was that the time of her demise? I have a gut feeling that Thomas,s baptism in 1715ish would have taken place in St Mary's, Deane. St Peters, Bolton Le Moors or St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, in that order of priority. Because I am at the other end of the country and not likely to be in the area until next spring, it would be greatly appreciated if SKS could bear this in mind when next looking at these Leigh parish records and assist me with this brick wall.
