    2. Hi Valerie Saw your note about Plank Lane. I was born at the "Firs" in 1944. Do you or your mum know when and why it closed? Is there any history of the place in Leigh Library? I believe houses are built there now. Chris

    2. Hi, Chris, I will certainly ask mum whether she knows anything about the Firs, although she left Leigh on her marriage in 1937, so I don't hold out too much hope. However, my aunt, her youngest sister, lived in Plank Lane until she moved to Lowton in the mid 1960's, so I will mention it when I next speak to her. 3. Hello Chris The Firs closed in the mid to late 70's- I think -due to rationalisation and a lot of money was needed to upgrade the Firs. There was a great outcry at the time but as usual the powers that be got their way and everyone had to go to Billinge Hospital where there is a large Maternity Unit. This worried a lot of Leigh people as their offsprings were pie eaters!!! There is now talk of closing Billinge and everyone going to Wigan Albert Edward!!
