Hello I am researching CUNDLIFFE ,DREW,CLITHEROE,BALDWIN,JACKSON all with connections to Leigh. William DREW my ggg grandfather was born in Staunton Gloucs but moved to Westhoughton and married Elizabeth CLITHEROE at Deane Parish Church in 1828 .According to their marriage certificate they both lived in Westhoughton although Elizabeth was living with her parents at Claremont Bolton in 1841. Her Parents were Thomas and Jane CLITHEROE (sometimes spelled CLITHEROW), Thomas was an engineer. On Elizabeths census returns she is born in Horwich. She and all her brothers and sisters were christened at Wigan Parish Church. I wonder if any one has any idea why they should travel to Wigan to be christened. William and Elizabeth travelled around the country ( he was a miner )living in Durham Derbyshire and Wigan but eventually ended up in Leigh owning the Swan Hotel. He is buried in Leigh cemetery with Elizabeth and the grave next to them belongs to Elizabeths parents Thomas and Jane CLITHEROE. I presume Thomas and Jane must have moved to Leigh at some earlier date. Thomas died ! in 1879 and Jane in 1870. If anyone has the 1861 or 1871 census for Leigh and surrounds could they look for them please? I would be very grateful. The BALDWINS and JACKSONS were canal people from the Plank Lane Area my grandma was born on a barge as were her brothers and sisters mainly Manchester Abram Leigh and Lee (not Leigh) I dont know where Lee is although I have found one in Shropshire near to the canal -could be that. On the census there is no boat name - any ideas how I can find the name? The CUNDLIFFES were glass makers from Plank Lane area if anyone else is researching these names please get in touch Hope I haven't bored you all!! Pamela
