Does anyone have any idea where the following surname may have originated? BRECKEL, BRECKELL, BREAKELL, BREAKALL, BREAKELL, BREAKILL, BREAKHALL, BREACKELL, BREAKHELL, BREAKHILL. There is a number of them around the Blackburn Lancashire area. Thank you Mike Morris Toronto Canada
Hi Mike, I have just looked up the name Breckel and its variations in the Oxford Encyclopaedia of English Surnames, though the name is not listed I discovered the following. Working on the assumption that the name is in two parts: Names preceded with Breck, Break, are nicknames as in Breakspear [ someone who broke his spear ] , Breaklance, The second part of the name Kel, Kell is the old English shortened term for Kettle, it is also a spelling variation of Keal which is a place in Lincolnshire, and also Keele in Staffordshire. Hope this helps.
