Hi Dave, I don't really think that we Howfeners would be cruel or daft enough to cut a cow's head off because it was stuck in the gate, and the gate cost more than the cow. The Parish Church is dedicated to St. Bartholomew. I think that as Saint Bartholomew was flayed alive and then he was beheaded, this was the basis of his patronage for tanners.
