I am hoping that knowledgeable lister can help me with my identity crisis. My Mum was born in Westleigh. Does this make me a "Cowhead" or a "Pie Eater"? I have been following recent comments by other listers who seem to know the difference and I thought that I could ask without getting a "flame job". Jim, That would make her a Leyther, more specifically a Westleyther. A quick guide: Person born in: LEIGH = Leyther WESTHOUGHTON = Cowyed WIGAN = Pie-eater (among other words that cannot be printed on a family mailing list) ATHERTON = Benter (Can someone confirm this?) TYLDESLEY = Bonger (and this?) My Dad was born in Piercebridge, just outside of Darlington in the NE of England and he was a Geordie. DAVE

When i moved the 10 miles or so from Bolton (I`m a Bowtner,apparently) i remember a magazine called Leyth,Bent and Bongs. This catered for the areas of Leigh,Atherton and Tyldesley and regularly contained hatchet jobs on the town of wigan.At the risk of upsetting other listers,i couldn`t understand a word of it! Having lived in Leigh since 1979 i am now fully conversant in Leyth and have been conditioned with a healthy disregard for anything wiggin!
