Dear all, One of my wider family ancestors died at "Hawkhurst, Bedford" in 1842. Does anyone have any information on Hawkhurst.... was it a farm or (perhaps) a hospital (the person died of consumption), or just a house. I don't seem to be able to find it on any censuses. Thanks, Dennis
Hi Dennis Hawkhurst was about half a mile east of Lately Common, just by the junction of the Pennington Brook, the Bedford Brook and the Moss Brook (where the three streams join up to form the Glaze Brook). Lately Common is the present intersection of the A580 East Lancs Road and the A574 Leigh-Warrington Road. There is a farm marked as Hawkhurst Farm on the current Landranger OS map at grid reference SJ 681 983 but on the 1845 map that farm is named Nether Barrow and Hawkhurst is shown a little further west, at the point where the modern map has an unnamed building at SJ 675 982. Hi Dennis Since my original reply I have rechecked on a more recent printing of the Landtanger map. The name of the farm at grid reference SJ 681 983 has now been corrected to Netherbarrow but the one at SJ 675 982 which I know from the 1845 map to be Hawkhurst is still unnamed.
