El;len Mather (bc 1812 Lowton) married Joseph Talbot (bc 1818 Lowton) 2 Septermber 1839 at Winwick PC. They had children - William, Wilmot, Betty (m Peter Hindley), Joseph, Simeon, and Mary (m William Yates and died 1901) Ellen stated at marriage her Father's name was Thomas. As she died c 1869 she must have been born c1812. (Jospeh died in 1863 aged 45, so was bc1818 - a minor at his marriage) I do not know which Mather family unit of which Thomas was the head that Ellen belonged to. Can anyone help unravel this mystery please? Gavin Yates (seeking Yates, Bolton, Adamson in Lowton, Harrison in Golborne and Leigh) --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Thanks Dave, I knew there must have been one in the vicinity. Would you happen to know when it closed? My mother lived at 140 Plank Lane - very close to Talbot Road, so I think she would have known if it had still been in existence then. Hello List, Does any one have access to non-conformist church records in the Leigh area? I am trying to find the baptism record for my gggrandmother, JEMIMA BULLOUGH, she was born around 1813. I have not been able to find her baptism in the parish records. She married my gggrandfather, JAMES GREEN, in 1833 at Leigh Parish. Her first child was baptized at Chow Bent Chapel, Atherton, in 1832. Jemima was burried at Daisy Hill Primitive Methodist Chapel in 1855. So she seems to have been a methodist. The methodist church records seem harder to get hold of than the CofE, would appreciate any ideas or help. Thanks Pat In Ottawa

Hello Chris The Firs closed in the mid to late 70's- I think -due to rationalisation and a lot of money was needed to upgrade the Firs. There was a great outcry at the time but as usual the powers that be got their way and everyone had to go to Billinge Hospital where there is a large Maternity Unit. This worried a lot of Leigh people as their offsprings were pie eaters!!! There is now talk of closing Billinge and everyone going to Wigan Albert Edward!! Hi I forgot to add that the glass works was just outside the Leigh boundary and in fact in Abram - at that point Plank Lane itself forms the boundary, only the south side being in Leigh. Hello Valerie I joined the canal boat list a while back but no joy. No sorry I dont know where the glass works was .My mother (who would be 99 if she had lived she died 5 years ago) always said they had owned the glassworks in Plank Lane but I think this was a family myth! She thought it was somewhere near the Common Lane area (your mum will know where that is) When I next go into the Library in Leigh I will look up the trade directories and see what I can find. I have found my gg grandfather in Plank Lane and his job was a glass maker, but the address was a private house and like you I have noticed a lot of glass blowers makers etc in the area in 1881. Thanks for your interest If I find anything I will let you know Pamela ----- Original Message ----- From: "Valerie @ ntlworld.com" <v.lirakis@ntlworld.com> To: <ENG-LAN-LEIGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 06, 2003 8:15 PM Subject: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Re: [(ENG-LEIGH)] Canal Boat People > Hi, Pamela, > > I have just been browsing through the various mailing lists and saw one for > canal boat people - see web site below. > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/ENG/ > > Regarding the Cundliffes, do you know where the glass works was, as I found > several glass makers living in the Plank Lane area on the 1881 census. Hi, Chris, I will certainly ask mum whether she knows anything about the Firs, although she left Leigh on her marriage in 1937, so I don't hold out too much hope. However, my aunt, her youngest sister, lived in Plank Lane until she moved to Lowton in the mid 1960's, so I will mention it when I next speak to her. Pam, That's it - Turner Bros! I guess I'm turning out to be a bit of a ruffian in my youth. Playing soccer on private land and climbing fences to rob a few marbles. I'm building quite a rap sheet here. I would be interested in finding someone who I hope is still in Leigh. If you are interested in helping please contact me offlist. DAVE

Hey Guys, Both my sister and I were born at Firs Maternity Home on Firs Lane, Leigh. She, being younger than me, was born in 1969 so it was still operative then at least. I remember playing soccer on its front grounds when a teenager, which would mean that it was still standing but closed by 1980ish. I seem to remember that it was still there while the miner's strike of '84 took place as we used its grounds as a cut through from Firs Lane to Firs Park and on to Wigan Road where I used to live. I know that I have a picture of it somewhere on this computer. If anyone is interested contact me offlist. DAVE

Hi There Henry Newton (my great x 2 grandfather) lived in Plank Lane and is described as a "glass cutter" in 1881. Family tradition has it that he did quite well after getting the job of glazing Leigh Spinners. Interesting point you make. Where did he learn his trade? Thanks too for the site for canal boat people. THomas Davies ( another x2 great grandfather) worked on the canal boats and lived and lived by the canal in Leigh in Chapel Walk Pennington. There are other canal boat workers living in the same street. Cheers Gill Hamilton
